Question 1580: I emailed you in desperation (Subtitle: Why can't I hit the ball? A tennis recovery method for players who have started to feel lost)
Nice to meet you.
After reading your articles, I am emailing you in desperation.
I am truly unable to make contact with the ball, and I keep shanking it constantly.
It makes a sound I've never heard before, and I feel so embarrassed.
I've been playing tennis on and off since my university club days, and I started attending a tennis school 10 years ago. I am 58 years old.
I used to be told that I was good, but now my strokes and volleys are unstable, and although I've researched various things and changed schools, I'm in the worst slump of my life!
After spending so much time and money, I'm still at a beginner-intermediate level...
And I'm often told things by my coach that hurt my feelings... (laughs)
I know I might not have much room for improvement at my age, but I hope to get better even just a little bit.
I want to enjoy playing tennis.
Recently, I've been feeling down because my win rate in city tennis matches is poor.
I would appreciate any advice you could give me.
Thank you in advance.
▶ Reasons for not making contact or shanking the ball
The reason you are unable to make contact and are shanking the ball constantly is likely because you have researched various things and areplaying while consciously trying to implement those ideas, which prevents you from seeing the spin of the ball.
Alternatively, if it is with your strokes, it is suspected that there isa gap between your image and reality.
As statedhereon Tennis Zero, this is a "remote land" even among the crowded websites on the internet, so if you have arrived here, I believe you arestill researching and searching quite extensively.
▶ There is something more important than athletic ability
If you are 58, you are 3 or 4 years my senior in life experience.
Speaking from my own experience, while I also feel the limits of my physical potential (oh boy), mentally, at 54 (I'll be 55 this year), I believe thatI have nothing but room for growth.
And to improve at tennis, you don't need the athletic ability to jump or leap; rather, your image and concentration hold the key.
As proof, there are countless scenes on tennis courts where young male students are soundly defeated by senior players.
In sports like volleyball, rugby, or the 100-meter dash, thiswould not be the case.
Therefore, tennis can be called a rare lifelong sport thatpeople of all ages and genders can enjoy together without handicaps (related article: "You don't need athletic ability for tennis!").
▶ The one and only reason your shining talent disappeared
Now, if you were "told you were good in the past," thenthis might be a quick fix.
Even though you originally possessed excellent tennis sense, you are not doing well simply becauseyou are now conscious of the hitting methods and forms taught by conventional tennis instruction.
If youstop being conscious of those things entirely and just watch the ball's spin well and play as you feel, you will be fine.
▶ The mystery of how the more you try to do it exactly as told, the less you can do it
It is understandable that you feel hurt by what your coach says.
As written on thetop pageof Tennis Zero, it is not that you cannot do it "even though you are doing itasthe coach says," but rather that you cannot do itbecauseyou are doing it as the coach says.
That said, the coach does not have any ill intentions.
The idea that focusing on your swing or form will make you better at tennis is the geocentric theory that is common sense today.
However, the reality is the exact opposite: the heliocentric theory.
The shocking truth is that if you focus on your swing or form, you won't get better, you'll actually get worse (see related article: Just like the geocentric and heliocentric theories).
▶ Don't worry. Your safe voyage is about to begin!
After searching everywhere and not knowing what to do, you are drowning, so it is only natural that you would want to grasp at straws.
But Tennis Zero is not a straw (laughs).
Now that you have arrived, please rest assured as if you were on a large, sturdy ship.
Regarding your tennis improvement, I am prepared to take responsibility. Let's have fun and increase your win rate!
So, do not focus on your swing or form at all, and play by watching the ball's spin and feeling it.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
