A Moving Finale with Everyone in Tears at the 9-Member Last Concert! Kep1er JAPAN CONCERT 2024 <Kep1going> Live Report 47 - K-POP Called Youth Vol. 188

Kep1er has successfully concluded their final concert as a nine-member group.

I am still immersed in the profound emotion and lingering memories of that day, unable to pull myself away.

The nine-member global girl group Kep1er held the 'Kep1er JAPAN CONCERT 2024 <Kep1going>' at K-Arena Yokohama from July 13th to 15th, drawing approximately 45,000 fans over the three days.

In addition to a live stream across 20 countries and regions worldwide, the final performance was also broadcast via live viewing in movie theaters across Japan.

The significance of this final performance was extremely deep and heavy.

It was the final live performance for the nine-member Kep1er lineup, and on that day, their activities as a nine-piece group came to an end.

On May 30th, it was announced through their agency that they would continue activities as a seven-member group excluding MASHIRO and YESEO from July 2024 onwards, and it was announced that this Japanese concert would mark the end of their activities as a nine-member group.

As I watch the end of Kep1er's first chapter, I would like to touch upon the birth of Kep1er and my encounter with them.

Kep1er was born from the Korean audition program 'Girls Planet 999: The Girls Saga' (commonly known as Girls Planet), and their activities were scheduled for a limited period of two years and six months from their debut on January 3, 2022.

My journey with K-POP began with Kep1er.

One day, while living a life that felt somewhat unfulfilled, my wife was watching an audition program, which happened to be 'Girls Planet 999: The Girls Saga,' where Kep1er was born.

It was a survival show featuring 99 girls from Japan, China, and South Korea aiming to become idols.

I took a quick look, it seemed interesting, so I immediately registered for a free account on AbemaTV,

and once I started watching from the first episode, I couldn't stop.

And from the 7th episode until the final 12th episode where the debut members were decided,

I watched it in real-time every Friday night at 8:00 PM without fail, and I became obsessed.

On October 22, 2021, when the debut members were decided in the final episode, I watched that moment of joy.

Then, I became hooked on K-POP, and at my wife's suggestion to try writing articles about K-POP, 2 years and 9 months have passed, and I have even been able to publish a book on K-POP.

I have been writing articles about Kep1er since before their debut and from their debut day.

In other words, it was undoubtedly Kep1er that invited me onto the path of K-POP.

That Kep1er is bringing an end to their activities as a 9-member group.

I felt I had to witness it. That's what I thought.

I attended the final performance on the 15th, which was the last live concert for the 9-member lineup.

I would like to introduce the details of the live concert, which was filled with moving moments as both the members and the audience were in tears on the day, as well as the setlist, playlist, and the members' speeches at the end.

So, let's look back on that day, which became a moving finale!

That day, I woke up at 4:40 AM, went to buy an iced latte, and went for an early morning drive.

After that, I went to a chiropractor, and while listening to the setlist for this tour, I headed to Yokohama K-Arena.

Then I arrived at K-Arena, and my seat was also a very easy-to-see seat!

And finally, the show began!

As it was the final day of the concert, Yokohama K-Arena was packed to the brim up to LEVEL 7 (the highest seats), and amidst the beautiful glow of the penlights, the venue was already wrapped in an atmosphere mixed with tension and excitement.

Then, after a VCR of the members standing in a garden was shown, the 9 members finally appeared on the main stage dressed in beautiful white outfits, and cheers erupted all at once.

The opening song started with "LVLY," which has both stylishness and allure, and Hikaru's dance break was also full of spirit and amazing! And in the album's title track "Straight Line," the brilliant dance was synchronized and beautiful!

After that, the members greeted the audience one by one, and leader Yujin introduced, "There are many songs that Kep1ians have loved over the past two and a half years. Today, we will show you each one," and after performing "PROBLEM," a track from their first full-length Korean album "Kep1going On," they performed "Grand Prix," which has an addictive chorus choreography and melody, and then the masterpiece "MVSK (Japanese ver.)," which became synonymous with their stylish charm when Kep1er was born, was illuminated by red and white lights, making it beautiful and the best!

After that, the venue got even more excited with "Giddy (Japanese ver.)," a disco-punk genre song that expresses the excitement of a girl facing the emotion of "love" for the first time, and the powerful "Wing Wing," where they sing "Wave released to the world." Then, the members said, "We're going closer to you all now!" and during the performance of "Daisy," some members appeared in the 1st-floor audience seats, and I was overwhelmed with emotion when Mashiro passed right in front of me!

In the middle part, they changed into outfits based on blue and black, and captivated the venue with unit song stages divided into three groups!

First, Dayeon, Hikaru, and Young-eun performed "Celebrate" while singing passionately with hand mics, and showed off a sharp dance that was in perfect sync with the backup dancers, which was super cool!

Mashiro, Chaehyun, and Bahiyyih sat on chairs for 'Highlight,' delivering a mellow and beautiful vocal performance. I was moved once again by the beauty of their live singing.

The unit performances concluded with Yujin, Xiaoting, and Yeseo's 'Cruise,' where they showcased crystal-clear vocals and a stunning dance performance with lovely movements. Captivating the audience with their three distinct styles of expression, I was reminded once again that Kep1er is a group of nine wonderful members, each with outstanding individuality and talent.

Furthermore, they sang 'Don't Lose Your Smile,' which Mashiro participated in writing, lined up in a row across the stage; it is a truly heart-touching song that I love!

Just listening to the opening vocals and lyrics, 'Do you remember the day we first met?', brought me to the verge of tears, and many Kep1ians (the Kep1er fandom name) in the venue were also crying, prompting the Kep1er members to call out, 'Don't cry!' They themselves seemed to be desperately holding back from being moved to tears by the audience.

Then, after Young-eun introduced it by saying, 'This is a song filled with our feelings for the Kep1ians who always give us so much love,' and Yujin added, 'We hope to convey our feelings to the Kep1ians through this song,' they sang 'Dear Diary.' This is another wonderful song whose warm vocals deeply touch the heart!

Then, footage from the moment their debut was decided on 'Girls Planet 999' was shown, and I was on the verge of tears again. The performances of 'Utopia,' 'Shine,' and 'O.O.O' after showing those memorable scenes from their early debut days were truly moving!

In particular, 'Utopia' is an original song from Girls Planet that I love! It felt like a symbol of Yeseo from that time, and I was deeply moved by the way she sang it with all her heart. I heard that it was performed for the first time at this concert due to strong fan demand, and I am so glad I got to see it.

Yeseo expressed her gratitude, saying, 'It feels like just yesterday that we were practicing 'O.O.O,' but time has passed, and here we are now, meeting Kep1ians on this wonderful stage. It is all thanks to the Kep1ians.'

And then, the title track 'Shooting Star' from their first and last Korean full album as a 9-member group, 'Kep1going On'!

This song is a moving masterpiece where the melody, vocals, dance, and lyrics all express Kep1er's journey so far and their future hopes in the best way possible, leaving me with a sense of catharsis as if I were watching a movie. The Kep1ians' enthusiastic cheers added to the emotion, making it even more moving!

Yujin said, 'I really like this song because it contains our story. Especially through the 'Shooting Star' stage, I was able to feel how much the Kep1ians love us,' and Hikaru added, 'We were also able to perform while making eye contact and feeling moved.' I believe the power this song holds is truly significant for them as well.

After that, once they announced that the end of the performance was approaching, Young-eun powerfully stated, 'As long as we continue to think of each other, the story of Kep1er and Kep1ians will not end; it will continue forever. Promise!'

Then, Dayeon said, 'If you look for us, we are always ready to fly over 'WA DA DA',' and Mashiro told the venue with high energy, 'Let's enjoy the final stage 'Freshly'!' When the intro to 'We Fresh (Japanese ver.)' began with blaring guitar sounds, they all showed off perfectly synchronized, sharp dance moves, followed by an overwhelming performance of their massive debut hit 'WA DA DA.' I really think Kep1er's stage presence is incredible every time!

And the following song, 'Back to the City,' makes you feel hopeful and brightens your mood when you listen to it. Kep1er's music and performances truly give us energy!

Finally, the nine of them held hands in a row, said, 'Thank you very much. We were Kep1er!', and left the stage with smiles.

After that, as the powerful, non-stop encore continued, handwritten messages from the Kep1er members to Kep1ians were projected onto the screen, creating a touching moment.

With messages like 'I will never forget the love Kep1ians gave me' (Chaehyun), 'The nine of us will continue to work hard as always, so please watch over us' (Hikaru), 'Please don't forget that the nine of us in Kep1er are one in heart' (Huening Bahiyyih), and 'We are forever, right?' (Youngeun), expressing their love and bond that will continue unchanged, a huge round of applause erupted.

Then, they appeared again in black T-shirts and plaid mini-skirts!

From here on, the final greetings from each of the nine members—a moment we will surely never forget—was a moving 40 minutes. 😭😭 *The full text of the greetings, excluding some Chinese and English, is introduced at the end of the article.

Yujin said, 'Kep1ians have always been a grateful presence that gives us strength,' and starting with Xiaoting, the entire venue began to tear up during the greetings.

When Xiaoting expressed her gratitude, saying, 'Thanks to all the Kep1ians, I was able to become an idol and stand here. Thank you so much for always being by my side,' she turned her back and cried. When Dayeon, who was next to her, hugged her, she couldn't stop crying even more. My tear ducts burst at this point, and I spent the rest of the time wiping my tears with a towel while listening.

She said, 'To the members I spent three years with, I have no real sense that today is the last concert for the nine of us. I can't believe it. I don't even want to use the word 'last.' I think I know better than anyone how much the nine of us worked for Kep1er.'

Dayeon said, 'Thanks to Kep1ians, I was able to achieve the debut I had dreamed of for a very long time. And I was able to meet eight angel-like members and have happy activities under the name Kep1er. Kep1ians changed my life,' and as she spoke, she also expressed her gratitude to Mashiro and Yeseo, who were leaving the group today, and tears overflowed.

Also, when Yujin said through tears, 'I might have been an immature leader, but thank you so much for following me well,' Chaehyun warmly called out, 'Unnie, you were our best leader. Thank you for your hard work.'

Youngeun expressed her gratitude to her family, as well as to Kep1ians and the members. Calling out, 'Dad, I'm working hard, right?', she finally said in Japanese, 'We'll be together forever. I love you! Thank you everyone!' and conveyed it in a loud voice.

Hikaru revealed her hidden true feelings, saying, 'Because every day was happy and fun, I didn't want to think about the end, and maybe I was careful not to let the word 'last' come out with the members,' and added, 'I don't think this decision was easy at all. I'm sure it was scary, but I'm truly grateful that you made this decision. I am proud of everyone.'

Mashiro showed an expression that mixed gratitude and loneliness, saying, 'Thank you for always being by my side for two and a half years, watching over me, making happy days, and making me smile. Thank you so much for understanding even when we didn't have to put our hardships into words. I will continue to love you, and we are always one.'

Yeseo delivered a message to each member, but to Hikaru, she said, 'Hikaru-unnie, who is cute but sometimes I thought I wanted to punch once,' and when it came to Dayeon, she skipped the message, which led to Dayeon teasing her, causing gentle laughter. Finally, she shouted in Japanese, 'We will always be Kep1er!' and the image of her resting her head on Mashiro's shoulder next to her and making a heart pose is burned into my eyes.

Chaehyun declared, 'So that you don't get discouraged in the midst of anxiety, please don't leave our side. Please watch over the nine of us in Kep1er as we continue to move toward our big dreams. We will continue to be happy. And we will also bring happiness to all of you.'

Finally, Bahiyyih said, 'Actually, I'm telling you this now, but in the early days of our debut, I wondered if I should be here. I'm sorry that I only showed you my nervous side and couldn't show you a happy side at first,' she said frankly, and tears overflowed again here. 'But meeting these eight members was truly a miracle. I am sincerely grateful to all the Kep1ians who let me stand on such a shining stage.'

She also prefaced, 'There is someone important who came to see our concert for the first time while we were active for two and a half years,' and revealed that her brother, Huening Kai, a member of TOMORROW X TOGETHER, was visiting. The venue buzzed, and when she called out, 'Actually, I wanted to show you sooner, but how was it? It was good, right?', all the TXT members responded with full-hearted gestures and applause, which was a very warm sight.

Then, they sang the famous ballad from the 'Girls Planet 999' mission, 'Another Dream,' while the members leaned on each other and exchanged feelings through their eyes. They kept eye contact with the fans until the very end, calling out to them as much as they could before leaving the stage... or so we thought, but then for a double encore, Yeseo appeared on stage saying, 'We've come back. You're happy, right?' and Hikaru added, 'It's impossible to end on a sad note, isn't it?' The members appeared on stage, and the venue was filled with a sense of happy unity!

Then, the venue lights dimmed, and numerous video messages of love from Kep1ians to Kep1er were shown, and the members, presented with this surprise, were seen in tears once again.

After that, the members appeared on every level of the stands, including the top floor, and while singing 'Sugar,' they descended into the audience area. They responded to requests from fans they could meet up close, such as taking photos and making heart poses, which must have been an unforgettable moment for both sides.

The finale was decorated with a grand chorus of the final song, 'Daisy,' throughout the venue. While reluctant to part, they waved their hands big until the very last moment before the stage doors closed, and the 3-hour-plus final stage for the nine members came to a close, wrapped in emotion.

It was a truly wonderful performance.

I headed home in a deep, deep lingering mood.

July 15, 2024. Kep1er closed the curtain on its 9-member system at the final performance.

Above all, what remained in my heart was the strength of the bond between Kep1er and Kep1ians.

It was a performance where I felt from the bottom of my heart that that bond is truly deep and filled with love.

Kep1er will continue its activities with a 7-member system consisting of Choi Yu-jin, Xiaoting, Kim Chae-hyun, Kim Da-yeon, Hikaru, Huening Bahiyyih, and Seo Young-eun.

Meanwhile, Yeseo and Mashiro will re-debut in September as members of 143 Entertainment's new girl group 'MADEIN,' but I want to continue supporting all nine of them just as I always have.

Wishing for the flower path that will continue for each of these nine individuals.

Kep1ians, thank you for making time to come and watch us again today. Thanks to all of you Kep1ians, I was able to become an idol and stand here in this place. To the members I spent three years with, I still can't believe that today is our last concert as nine. I can't believe it. I don't even want to use the word 'last.' It's very sad. For three years, I haven't been able to spend time with my family, but because the members were always there with me, it became a truly happy and fun time. Thank you so, so much for being with me until now. I think I know better than anyone how much the nine of us worked for Kep1er. Truly, in my heart, you are all the best. So, I wanted to tell all the members, 'Good work' and 'I love you' (Greeting in Chinese as well).

DAYEON

The final day of our concert as nine has arrived. I feel very lonely, but these were truly three happy days. Thanks to Kep1ian, I was able to achieve the debut I had dreamed of for such a long time. And I was able to meet eight angel-like members and have a happy career under the name Kep1er. Kep1ian changed my life. Thank you! And the two and a half years we spent together as nine were truly happy.

To all the members who ran this race with me, thank you so much for your hard work. I think you have become a truly reassuring family. I would be happy if we could continue to rely on each other from now on. And Mashiro-unnie and Yeseo, thank you so much for your hard work as well. I love you both so much. The time that I thought would never come has arrived. Thinking that today's stage is our last as nine, my heart felt heavy at times even during the concert. Thank you for loving and supporting the nine of us for the three years since 'Girls Planet'. Today's stage might be our last as nine, but the nine of us are always together. You know that, right? So, I would be happy if you could continue to send us your support and love wherever we are. Thank you for loving the nine of us from the bottom of your hearts.

YOUNGEUN

First of all, we were able to successfully finish this concert. I have felt this until now, but if it weren't for the nine members of Kep1er, and if it weren't for all of you Kep1ian, I don't think any of this would have come true. I wanted to shine on stage, and I think I was able to shine thanks to all of you Kep1ian. Thank you so much. And if these nine members hadn't been together, I think I would have given up. During 'Girls Planet', I was having a very hard time at the end, but because the members kept watching over me and saying 'It's okay', I think I am able to stand on this stage now. I knew this day would come, and I knew from about three years ago when we debuted that we were an artist with a set period, but I didn't think two and a half years would pass so quickly. Every day was happy and fun, so I didn't want to think about the end, and maybe we were careful not to use the word 'end' with the members. Today is the last stage as nine, but thank you so much for filling me with such happy feelings. I will never forget this for the rest of my life.

When I was discouraged, if it weren't for these eight people, I don't think I would have been able to stand up again. We will be eternal, and we will be together forever, so don't be sad. Thank you to the Kep1ian who let me see so many wonderful sights over the past two and a half years. So many people came today, and knowing that there are people watching from outside the venue as well is something I couldn't have imagined before my debut, so I'm very happy. From the time of our debut until now, I've been running forward while cherishing the time with the members, but today in particular, I performed every song and dance with all my heart, feeling that it was the last time I could perform as Kep1er. I think that reached the members and the Kep1ian, and it was a truly wonderful day. I hope it wasn't a sad day, but a day that everyone watching could think of as a happy day. Thank you.

After 'Girls Planet' ended, we met you, Kep1ian, later than planned before our debut. When I think back to that time, I remember thinking, 'I want to see them so badly, why is time passing so slowly?' Back then, I felt like time was moving slowly, but why does it feel like these two and a half years have passed so quickly now? There were certainly tough days, but standing on this stage now, I can only remember the good and fun times. My heart aches so much. Thanks to all of you, Kep1ian, I was able to stand here. And I was able to meet eight wonderful, beautiful, and cute older sisters. While we were active, every single day was precious, and every single day was fun. Even now, it doesn't feel real that this is the final moment, and I feel both happy and sad at the same time. Thank you so much for loving and supporting me, Kang Yeseo, and Kep1er. Thank you so much to all the Kep1ian who made me realize that I am someone who is loved this much. I saw all of you, Kep1ian, from the stage today, and I really thought you looked like stars. I have burned your images into my eyes, so I will remember them forever.

Chaehyun unnie, who always hugged and comforted me. Hiyyih unnie, who always made us have fun and told jokes that made us laugh when we were having a hard time. Hikaru unnie, who is cute, but there were times I thought I wanted to hit her once. Dayeon unnie, who always kept her struggles to herself and held them in, only telling us later. Yujin unnie, who cried alone in the bathroom. Thank you for always watching over us even when we played pranks, and for always smiling even when things were tough. I love you, Dayeon unnie. Xiaoting unnie, who was always by my side, never changing. And Mashiro unnie, who spoiled me so much that I thought it might be too much. I debuted on 'Girls Planet,' and I am so happy to be standing on this big stage with everyone and meeting all of you, Kep1ian. Actually, I'll say this now, but in the early days of our debut, I wondered if I belonged here. I'm sorry that I only showed you my nervous side and couldn't show you a happy side at first. But meeting these eight members was truly a miracle. And by working with everyone, I was able to make so many unforgettable memories. I am truly grateful to all the Kep1ian who allowed me to stand on such a shining stage. I want to continue to see these cute, beautiful, and wonderful members, so you will all stay with us until the end, right? Our hearts are always one.

And there is someone precious who came to see our concert for the first time in the two and a half years we've been active, and my brother came for the first time today. I actually wanted to show you sooner, but how was it? It was good, right? Thank you also to the members' brothers who came to watch with us.
