How to Live Without Regrets: Lessons from Seneca's 'On the Shortness of Life'

Hello, this is Tenmame.

Today, I would like to share some tips on how to live without regrets, based on the masterpiece 'On the Shortness of Life' by the ancient Roman philosopher Seneca.

This is a book that left a deep impression on me when it was recommended as a 'book to live by' by the author John Kim, who participated in a seminar I attended 10 years ago.

It is packed with wisdom that has resonated with many people for over 2,000 years.

And its message is surprisingly powerful for us living in the modern age.

Time is the greatest asset

Seneca says this:

'Life is not short, but we make it so by wasting it.'

When you read these words, doesn't something strike a chord in your heart?

When I first encountered these words, I instinctively stopped what I was doing and reflected on my own life up to that point.

The time I spent just mindlessly staring at my smartphone, the time I lost sight of myself by getting distracted by trivial things.

I realized that it is the accumulation of those moments that makes life feel short.

Seneca argues that 'time is a more precious asset than money or status.'

You might be able to earn back lost money, but you can never get back lost time.

Even so, we tend to underestimate the value of time.

We spend it freely for others, yet hesitate to spend it on ourselves.

While carrying that contradiction, aren't there times when we just let the days pass by aimlessly?

The courage to be the protagonist of your own life

Seneca also points out that 'many people have surrendered their lives to others.'

If you are being chased by work and relationships, and are putting off what you truly want to do, you must be screaming in your heart, 'That is not my life.'

So, what should you do?

Seneca says that it is important to 'first clarify what you truly desire.'

You are the protagonist of your own life.

There is no need to be swayed by the expectations or conventional wisdom of others.

If you want to make your life more exciting, start by searching for the way of life you truly desire.

To do that, first stop and take time to quietly listen to the voice of your own heart.

By listening to your true feelings, which are easy to overlook in the busyness of daily life, you should be able to see what is truly important to you.

Living each day to the fullest

Seneca also teaches us, 'Do not worry about the future, but savor the time that is now.'

Focusing only on the future and neglecting this very moment is an act that robs life of its richness.

If you waste today while wishing for tomorrow's happiness, the day you attain that happiness will never arrive.

When I encountered this idea, I decided to cherish my daily life more.

Small daily joys—savoring the time spent reading a favorite book, enjoying a delicious cup of coffee, or looking up at the blue sky.

Just by doing that, I felt my life begin to shine little by little.

Let go of fear and have the courage to take on challenges

What resonates with me most in Seneca's words is that 'life is enriched by action, not by fear.'

We tend to give up on many challenges because we are too afraid of failure.

However, isn't a life spent trapped in fear without ever taking on a challenge the greatest failure of all?

Even a small step is fine.

Why not try something you have always admired but hesitated to do?

That will become the catalyst that moves your life in a new direction.

When I started writing on note, I was afraid of what would happen if I failed.

However, it is precisely because I took that first step that I am able to write this piece to share with you today.

Choose the life you truly desire

Seneca's message asks us this question:

'Is the life you are living right now the one you truly wanted?'

The reason that question might catch you off guard is that you may have been ignoring your true feelings.

If the answer is 'NO,' you can change it starting this very moment.

Try pursuing what you really wanted to do, or that dream that has been lingering in your heart, even if it is just a little bit at a time.

Even if it is just a small step, it will bring you closer to a 'life that is truly your own.'

As we start 2025, I have written four articles to help you discover a 'life that is truly your own' and guide you toward taking action.

I recommend them as a compass for living out your mission.

*Although these are paid articles, they are on sale until 11:30 PM on January 20th. If they do not meet your expectations, refunds are available, so please feel free to read them.

As you work through the exercises in the articles one by one, you will seriously confront the most important questions in life and accelerate toward the way of living you truly desire!

With encouragement: Let's make choices that make life shine

Finally, here is some encouragement from me:

Your life belongs to you.

That is why you should not be bound by the expectations of others or by past failures.

To borrow Seneca's words, 'Living your time to the fullest is the only way to enrich your life.'

Starting today, try to cherish yourself just a little bit more.

Make time to read a book you love.

Savor something delicious.

Challenge yourself with something that makes your heart race with excitement.

Such small steps will eventually create a major change in your life.

I hope that your life, as you read this, will begin to shine along with Seneca's words.

Your time is your treasure.

Please cherish it and choose a way of life without regrets.

May you have a happy day today, being true to yourself.
