Something good that happened recently: I've been going to a coffee shop with a grumpy owner
It's Uni.
Recently, one of my dreams came true.
That dream was to "become a regular at a local coffee shop with a grumpy owner."
There is a coffee shop in my neighborhood that has the perfect vibe of a "local town cafe," and for the past few years, I've been going there with my kids every now and then. About three or four times a year, though.
This coffee shop is a small, Showa-style place where only the local middle-aged and elderly folks come, and the overall color scheme is basically "brown." But the Napolitan pasta and mixed juice are delicious, the owner is grumpy, and it's one of my favorites.
I always order the Napolitan and the mixed juice.
The Napolitan has a perfect balance of ketchup's sweet and sour flavor, the size of the onions, and a fresh texture that isn't over-fried. I also love that the menu calls it "Italian" instead of "Napolitan," which is very Osaka. The mixed juice is also a classic, reliable taste. By the way, the banana juice is also delicious. I order one or the other.
But the set meals, rice bowls, and sandwiches are also delicious. That's why my kids like it too.
Even though it's only a few times a year, the fact that I've been going regularly means that I might have vaguely achieved this great dream, right?
I realized that.
It's hard to draw the line on what makes someone a "regular," but since I've probably been there a total of 10 times in over three years, I'd like to consider it a success personally.
To begin with, I don't really know why I wanted to become a regular at a coffee shop.
It's just that a "local shop that isn't a chain where you can go without putting your guard up" seems like a relaxing place to be.
But in reality, it's not like I can truly relax there, but that's fine.
I think it's just nice that it's always there without going out of business.
That's why this coffee shop is truly my ideal coffee shop.
But there is one problem.
For the past few times I've gone, the owner has been getting friendlier.
Just the other day, when I went to that coffee shop with my kids, the owner said "Welcome" with a smile. Then he came to take our order right away, and to my surprise, when we were paying, the owner even said "Thank you" with a smile.
When I first started going, he wouldn't even say "Welcome," and he wouldn't come to take our order for a long time...
That was the best part about it...
Well, I suppose it's a good thing for a service business.
Maybe he recognized me as a regular.
However, my dream was for a "grumpy owner."
Isn't being grumpy the default for an owner, even to regulars?
What happened to the spirit of the old man who pretends to be an outsider with no interest in business?
If that's the case, does it mean my dream hasn't come true after all?
How should I interpret this...
I'm thinking about it a little.
