Kanji Reflecting Intense Love and Passion: 10 Selections to Unravel Burning Feelings
Love changes a person. It blows into ordinary days suddenly, like a storm,
disturbing the heart and heating the mind.
Intense love brings not only happiness but also pain.
Even so, we seek that flame, yearn for it, and reach out for it again and again.
People of the past entrusted the intensity of such love to kanji, waka poetry, and stories.
In this article, we will unravel 10 kanji that express intense love and passion, along with literary words. After reading, a small flame should surely be flickering deep within your heart as well.
Chapter 1 | 🔥 Retsu (Fierce) ── The Flame of Intensity
The kanji 'Retsu' originally represented the state of a wind blowing fiercely.
From there, it came to have the meaning of indicating the strength of momentum or emotion.
If compared to love, it is 'affection like a raging fire'.
The feeling of thinking of the other person is intense, burning brightly deep in the chest.
Wanting to touch, wanting to embrace, wanting to carry them away—it even evokes such impulses.
In literature and poetry, there is the term 'Retsujo' (fierce woman), which depicts a strong woman who stays true to her love or loyalty.
Love is a flame that sometimes makes people weak, and at other times creates strength beyond imagination.
'Keeping the heat of fierce love hidden in my heart.' (Early Modern Love Poetry)
Keeping a love like a raging fire hidden in the heart without speaking of it.
Intensity is not just something that appears on the outside; it is also a passion that continues to burn quietly on the inside.
Chapter 2 | 💥 Moeru (Burning) ── Blazing Passion
'Moeru' combines the fire radical with 'shikari' (thus), carrying the meaning of 'burning just like that.' It is a kanji that directly expresses the nature of fire.
In love, 'burning' is a state where passion reaches its peak and the heart surpasses reason. Before you know it, you are thinking about that person all day long.
Wanting to meet, wanting to talk, wanting to touch—such thoughts race through the heart.
A burning love is ephemeral, beautiful, and that is precisely why it attracts people so strongly.
'Secretly burning thoughts, not even telling the dew.' (The Tale of Genji)
The women of The Tale of Genji kept their burning love hidden in their hearts, telling no one and simply continuing to yearn. The more it remains unspoken, the more the flame of love intensifies.

Chapter 3 | 💗 Koi (Love) ── An Uncontrollable Heart
'Koi' is composed of 'thread' and 'heart,' representing a painful longing as if pulling at the heart. Tangled like threads, intertwined, and unable to be undone—that is love.
Love makes people obsessed and anxious. Whether in the time spent apart or the time spent together, it disturbs the heart and raises the heart rate.
"Longing and longing, even when we could meet, we do not; did I see you in my dream because we are to love each other?"
(Manyoshu)
Even though we should finally be able to meet, why can I only see you in my dreams?
Since ancient times, love has bewildered people and increased their sleepless nights.
Chapter 4 | 🌊 Shita (Longing) — Yearning Deeply
"Shita" expresses the feeling of following behind someone and yearning for them from afar.
The heart grows warmer the more we are unable to be together.
It is a word with such a mysterious power.
A longing heart is not flashy.
Yet, it is quiet and deep, harboring an intensity that sometimes even invites tears.
"Is it good to think of someone I cannot see? For it is not the truth within a heart that will not forget."
(Ono no Komachi, Kokin Wakashu)
Even if we cannot meet, I will continue to think of you without forgetting.
That feeling becomes so hot that it cannot be reached, and it continues to grow in intensity.
Chapter 5 | ⚡ Netsu (Heat) — The Intensity of the Heart
"Netsu" represents exceeding body temperature, being obsessed, obsession, and intense emotions.
"Passionate love," "obsession," and "frenzy"—these are the very states of a person being captivated by something.
The heat of love cannot be controlled by oneself.
Even if the mind understands, the heart is driven, and one loses sight of their surroundings.
"For your sake, I once thought my life was not worth keeping, but now I find myself wishing it would last longer."
(Izumi Shikibu)
I thought I didn't care about my life, but now I wish to live long and stay by your side.
The heat of love continues to burn as time passes, changing its form.
Chapter 6 | 🌠 Kogareru (Yearning) — A Heart Burning with Love
"Ko" originates from "to burn" or "to scorch,"
expressing intense feelings that scorch the heart.
A yearning love is painful and makes the chest ache.
We cannot meet, it cannot be reached, yet the feelings only grow.
That frustration makes love even hotter.
"When the wind blows, white waves rise on the offing; are you crossing the Tatsuta Mountain alone in the middle of the night?"
(Ise Monogatari)
In the middle of the night, the heart that yearns for you, wondering if you are crossing over alone in the wind, steals my sleep.
Chapter 7 | 🔥 Kuru (Going Mad) — Passion That Makes One Forget Oneself
"Kuru" is the state of losing reason and being dominated by emotions.
To go mad with love is to have one's heart stolen by the other and to lose sight of oneself.
A maddening love holds both pain and pleasure.
Both smiles and tears depend entirely on the other person.
"Mad longing changes a person; the sorrow of love, so unlike the ways of the world."
(Classical Love Poem)
Mad love changes people and changes the world.
It makes even that sorrow feel uniquely beautiful.

Chapter 8 | 🌸 Ai (Love) — Affection that transcends passion
"Ai" (Love) represents a deep, encompassing compassion.
It moves beyond the intensity of infatuation toward a calm and profound bond.
Yet, passion still breathes within love.
Because it is quiet, the fire that never goes out exists there.
"The heart that thinks of you is like a burning fire; the pain of it not being extinguished is unbearable."
(Shui Wakashu)
The pain of thinking of you, like a fire that will not go out.
Perhaps love is the act of continuing to embrace the embers of passion.
Chapter 9 | 🌹 Geki (Intensity) — The torrent of emotion
"Geki" (Intensity) represents a rushing, white-foaming stream of water.
It is not calm; it is the very torrent of emotion.
Intense love involves crying, laughing, getting angry, and forgiving,
with everything rushing in like a muddy torrent.
At times it exhausts people, and at times it gives them a sense of being alive.
"Since there is no one who understands my sorrow, I have no choice but to let the waves soothe my heart in this miserable life."
(Gosen Wakashu)
No one understands.
There are nights in the midst of such intensity when one has no choice but to have their heart soothed by the waves.
Chapter 10 | 🌌 Horeru (To fall in love) — A moment of heart-fluttering
"Horeru" (To fall in love) means "to lose one's heart."
Love at first sight is one of the most intense emotions, where one's heart is stolen the moment they meet.
The feeling of falling in love cannot be explained.
Just by looking at that person, the world becomes colorful, the heart races,
and reason becomes powerless.
"I can only think of the person I saw once; there is not a night that passes that I do not see you in my dreams."
(Goshui Wakashu)
Having seen you just once, you even appear in my dreams.
Falling in love is a spark that changes one's life in an instant.
🌷Column | What Intense Love Teaches Us
When you fall in love, the world changes.
The scenery you were used to seeing until yesterday begins to shine like a scene from a movie, your heart catches fire, your chest pounds, and sleepless nights increase.
Intense love is sweet, painful, and sometimes agonizing.
Your chest aches from thinking about the other person too much.
You want to touch them, hear their voice, and see them so badly.
Such passion can make a person happy, but also anxious.
But, strangely enough,
it is within such intense love that we come to know ourselves.
You may be swayed by your feelings for the other person and become aware of your own weaknesses, jealousy, and possessiveness.
On the other hand, you may also
discover for the first time that you are capable of caring for someone this deeply.
Intense love is like fire.
When it flares up, it illuminates its surroundings and shares its warmth.
However, if it burns too brightly, it can hurt both the other person and yourself.
That is why how we embrace and protect this flame is
a very important thing.
The flame of love eventually changes its form.
The intensity gradually, little by little, turns into gentleness, and the yearning turns into an all-encompassing love.
When we perceive that transition, we may come to understand, if only a little, the true meaning of "loving."
So, if there is anyone suffering from intense love right now, I want to tell you this:
"That flame will one day become a light that warms your heart."
Do not be impatient, do not be afraid, just embrace those feelings.
The days you loved intensely will surely shine gently upon your future self.

💛 Afterword
Do you know "Hideki Saijo"? He is a beloved singer I was obsessed with when I was a student. He has a song called "Hageshii Koi" (Intense Love) that is exactly that.
"Even if you tell me to stop, it's too late now.
Once you're caught in the wind of intense love, that's it."
At the time, this line, "Even if you tell me to stop," was often used in comedy sketches and the like.
It was quite popular.
This is part of Hideki's lyrics.
