#160 | To You Who Are Exhausted by Kindness — The Day You Realized You Were Helping the Wrong People —
"You're so kind."
"You're so observant."
"You're so reliable."
Actions that earned me these words
had, before I knew it,
become the "correct answer" within me.
Anticipating needs before they arise.
Putting myself last.
Never saying no when asked for help.
That was
the set of personal rules I had unconsciously created.
But those rules
from the very beginning,
did not include
the item "protect yourself."
And so,
without gratitude,
without boundaries,
I went to help those who took my efforts for granted.
The kinder you are, the more you push yourself beyond your limits.
For a long time,
I thought,
"I'm exhausted because I'm weak,"
"I wish I could be more efficient."
But then, one day, I realized.
The problem wasn't my personality.
The "structure" that causes depletion.
Looking back,
there was always the same pattern.
• I push myself beyond my limits
• Things work out for the moment
• The problem doesn't surface
• Nothing is adjusted
• Next time, I push myself beyond my limits again
This loop.
I thought I was supporting things with "kindness," but
in reality,
I was reinforcing a structure where problems remain invisible.
I was helping the wrong people.
Here, I had one important realization.
I was helping the wrong people.
This is not a phrase to blame myself with.
It is proof that my judgment criteria have grown.
Helping others itself is not a bad thing.
The problem is,
without gratitude,
without boundaries,
people who take it for granted
—that you were helping them that much.
Why does "helping the wrong person" lead to exhaustion?
The people you have been helping are,
likely, this type.
・They accept help not as "goodwill" but as "a given"
・They have no boundaries, and their demands escalate little by little
・They turn to aggression when things don't go their way
With this type,
the more you help, the worse their attitude becomes.
This is because, within them,
this kind of learning occurs.
"This person is someone I can push around."
That is why,
verbal abuse and malice occur.
But that,
is not because you are at fault.
It is simply the other person's immaturity manifesting.
Kindness is fine as long as you don't misdirect it.
You do not need to
let go of your kindness.
However,
you also don't need to offer it unconditionally.
There is an order to kindness.
First, protect yourself.
Next, cherish those who are truly important to you.
For everyone else, just don't lack courtesy.
When this order collapses,
kindness turns into self-sacrifice.
I am still not perfect.
Even so,
"I don't have to take on everything"
just by being able to think that,
my breathing has become a little easier.
If there is anyone right now
who feels,
"I'm kind, but it's painful."
It is not your fault.
It is just that
you are pushing yourself too hard within the structure.
In the next article, I plan to write about
how to quietly distance yourself without creating enemies
.
So that you, who have read this far,
can feel even a little bit better.
I will write the continuation with care as well.
