The Path to a Video Side Hustle Starting from Zero Ideas
Hello, I'm Mark.
I'm writing this note to gently nudge those of you who think,
“I want to start making videos, but I don't know what to create...”
forward.
For over 10 years, I have been utilizing social media and video to practice a flexible way of working. Currently, I support those aiming for a video side hustle through a course called 'UGC Creator Boost'.
To you, who thinks, “I want to make videos, but I don't know what to film”
First, to you who have become interested in a video side hustle.
I think that first step shows truly excellent sense.
We live in an era where you can complete both editing and filming with just a smartphone.
If you can master using that smartphone as a weapon instead of just a slab of metal, video can become a side hustle with great potential.
What is UGC? The currently trending video side hustle style
The genre I am working on is called 'UGC (User Generated Content)'.
This is a style where ordinary people create PR videos for products or services and earn rewards. Especially now, with mechanisms like TikTok Shop appearing, there is a chance to earn revenue every time a product you introduced is sold.
The starting line is 'finding reference videos'
And now, the main topic of today's theme.
The first step in a video side hustle is 'finding reference videos'.
In the 10+ years I've been making videos, this is the first thing I always do.
What kind of videos are already being made?
What kind of videos are selling?
From what angle could I reproduce this myself?
While analyzing these, the golden rule is to break them down into a format that you can 'make' yourself.
Aiming for 'originality' right away is a detour
Many people might feel that 'originality is important!'
However, aiming for something completely original from the start is as much of a detour as putting a 'tree branch' in a curry.
First, know the 'template'.
Watch about three reference videos and arrange them in your own way.
This is the most efficient way to improve your skills.
Planning is 90% of the work. Editing comes after that.
People starting out in video tend to focus on tools, asking "What editing software should I use?" or "What camera is best?"
But what is truly important is planning.
What kind of video to make, who it is for, and what the purpose is.
To think about these things, it is important to first analyze reference videos and absorb their structure and methods of expression.
The era of "selling things" through video is coming
In China and the United States, a culture where "individuals sell products through video" has already become commonplace.
Japan is just about to enter this phase as well.
Short videos on TikTok and Instagram
Corporate projects utilizing UGC
"Video-based sales" where you source and sell items yourself
Starting now gives you a huge advantage for a future where these things will be the norm.
"I can't find any reference videos..." When that happens
There are tricks to finding reference videos.

Summary: Start by "imitating"
"Good artists copy, great artists steal."
— Steve Jobs (quoting Picasso)
Originality begins with imitation.
First, learn the form, try imitating it, and then gradually add your own style.
That is the shortest route to success.
