107th National High School Baseball Championship - Day 6
Good morning, everyone. It is the 6th day of the tournament. We had a one-day delay, but I wonder how that will affect things. It looks like we are in for four varied and exciting games.
Tournament Day 6 - Game 1
Ken-Gifu Commercial (Gifu) vs. Nichidai Yamagata (Yamagata)
Ken-Gifu Commercial is making its 31st appearance after a 3-year absence. This veteran school is appearing in its 61st combined spring and summer tournament. This year, they have an incredibly powerful batting lineup. Their team batting average in the prefectural tournament was .395. In 6 games, the team hit 8 home runs, 3 triples, and 13 doubles. Their destructive power is outstanding. The core of the lineup consists of leadoff hitter Komase, cleanup hitter Sakaguchi, and catcher Koyari. These three alone have hit 5 home runs. The pitching staff is led by second-year ace Shibata, who has allowed only 1 run in 28 innings pitched. They dominated the Gifu tournament to get here. With that momentum, we will see how far they can advance in their 100th anniversary year.
Nichidai Yamagata is making its 20th appearance after a 2-year absence. This year's team is characterized by its double-ace system. The ace number belongs to Kobayashi, whose strength is pitching with changing speeds. He throws a slow curve in the 80 km/h range and also uses a sinker against left-handed batters. The other ace is Honda, a former ace who experienced the Koshien mound two years ago. His weapon is a fastball with good extension. The batting lineup supports these two. Their team batting average in the prefectural tournament was .365. While they don't hit many extra-base hits, they connect with singles from the top to the bottom of the order to score runs. The team has a high level of balance. They are aiming for a spot in the Koshien quarterfinals.
The composition of this game is Ken-Gifu Commercial's powerful batting lineup versus Nichidai Yamagata's double aces. It is a difficult game to predict. It will likely be a close contest, but I see Ken-Gifu Commercial with a slight advantage, expecting second-year ace Shibata to put up a strong fight.
Tournament Day 6 - Game 2
Hokkai (South Hokkaido) vs. Tokai University Kumamoto Seisho (Kumamoto)
Hokkai is making its 41st appearance after a 2-year absence. This year's team is characterized by a batting lineup that uses many sacrifice bunts and connects hits in a gritty manner. Among them, the central hitter is the number 3 batter, Sakurai. In the regional tournament, he had a batting average of .500 over 6 games. Also, the middle of the order is anchored by second-year players: number 2 Misawa, number 4 Chonan, number 5 Kusama, and number 6 Satake. The pitching staff is primarily a relay led by the unconventional side-arm left-hander Asamizu. Having remained undefeated in official games since the spring, we will see how far they can advance.
Tokai University Kumamoto Seisho is making its 4th appearance after a 2-year absence. They have built an offensive-minded team. Their team batting average in the prefectural tournament was .370. Leadoff hitter Fukushima stepped on home plate to score the first run in all 5 games. His batting average was .550. The middle of the order is also in good form, with number 3 Hiranaka at .556, number 4 Oga at .474, and number 5 Horita at .462. The pitching staff is led by ace right-hander Mizuno, whose strength is tenacious pitching. They also have sufficient depth in their relay, including the flashy slider-throwing Ogata and the skillful left-hander Miike. Last summer, they were eliminated in the first round. This year, they want to get revenge.
Both teams are evenly matched in terms of team strength. Both have middle-order hitters in good form. Tokai University Kumamoto Seisho wants to score first and bring the game into their winning pattern. On the other hand, the veteran school Hokkai wants to hang on with gritty, tenacious baseball even if they fall behind early. I see the veteran school Hokkai with a slight advantage here.
Tournament Day 6 - Game 3
Takagawa Gakuen (Yamaguchi) vs. Mirai Toyama (Toyama)
Takagawa Gakuen is making its 3rd appearance after a 4-year absence. They advanced through the Yamaguchi prefectural tournament with a winning relay from second-year right-hander Kinoshita (wearing number 10) to ace southpaw Matsumoto. Kinoshita's weapon is a fastball with a top speed of 146 km/h. Although there is some anxiety about his control, his strength is pitching that doesn't let the opponent focus on a target. On the other hand, ace Matsumoto has a pitching style of carefully hitting the corners and letting the batters hit into outs. These two different types of pitchers will confuse the opposing lineup. The batting lineup had 48 hits in 5 games. Their team batting average in the prefectural tournament was .345. The top of the order is in good form, but the bottom of the order is not to be outdone. They are aiming to advance to the top by winning one game at a time.
Mirai Toyama is making its first appearance. The entire school has 24 students. Of those, 23 are members of the baseball club. It is a correspondence school, and the remaining student is a 4th-year baseball club alumnus. In short, it is a baseball specialty school. Therefore, only one student is from Toyama Prefecture. Another characteristic is that there are many underclassmen. It is a rare team composition, though it is somewhat unavoidable since there are only 23 students. The focus is on ace southpaw Eto, who is also a candidate for the U18 national team. In the prefectural tournament, he pitched 30 innings and recorded 37 strikeouts. He uses skillful pitching, gathering fastballs in the mid-140 km/h range and breaking balls at the bottom of the zone. Matsui Hikaru, wearing number 10, is also very stable. The offense scored double-digit runs in 5 out of 6 games in the prefectural tournament. In particular, the number 3 hitter, second-year catcher Nakagomi, has a batting average of .526 and also hit a home run. The number 4 hitter is ace Eto. Not only does he pitch, but he also hit 2 home runs in the prefectural tournament. Eto is the pillar of both pitching and hitting. Can they win their first game and create a whirlwind?
This is a matchup between contrasting teams. Takagawa Gakuen has a stable game management style, while Mirai Toyama has momentum on its side. It looks like it will be a very interesting game. I have high expectations for the emerging force here. I see Mirai Toyama with the advantage.
Tournament Day 6 - Game 4
Toyohashi Chuo (Aichi) vs. Nichidai San (West Tokyo)
Toyohashi Chuo is making its first appearance in either the spring or summer tournament. The team's specialty is batting. Their team batting average in the prefectural tournament was .354. They had 6 consecutive games with double-digit hits leading up to the semifinals. They are confident in their hitting power, having recorded 9 hits in the final against Toho. The core is the number 5 hitter, catcher Matsui. He had the team's highest batting average in the prefectural tournament at .464. It is a lineup that can score from anywhere. Also, the pitching staff was unusual, with 9 players taking the mound in the prefectural tournament. Among them, ace Takahashi is the pillar of the pitching staff. His weapons are fastballs in the 140 km/h range and a sharp slider. He also has high ability to pitch complete games. Will they work together as a team to grab their first Koshien victory?
Nichidai San is making its 20th appearance after a 2-year absence. The hard-hitting Nichidai San has returned to Koshien. Of particular note is second-year student Ryo Tanaka, who bats cleanup. He hit 2 home runs in the West Tokyo tournament. Captain Honma, who bats before him, is a good hitter who can hit to all fields. The team batting average in the West Tokyo tournament was .364. Their powerful batting lineup is still alive and well. On the other hand, the pitching staff is anchored by ace Kondo. His strength is his control. He also has high ability to pitch complete games. They also have third-year right-handers Yatsu, Yamaguchi, and Kawakami in reserve. We will see how far they can advance with their powerful batting lineup as their weapon.
Both teams have power in their hitting. It might turn into a bit of a slugfest. If that happens, Nichidai San, with their higher level of experience, will likely have the advantage. I see Nichidai San with the advantage here.
