[Fiction] The Kuroda Manufacturing Story, Episode 6: The Leap
Toraichi, energized by his reunion with Mitsui, created a positive sense of urgency among his apprentices. Today's scheduled work was completed smoothly and quickly, and Toraichi returned to the office earlier than planned.
"Brother, sorry to keep you waiting. I'll show you to the hotel."
Mitsui stood up from his chair, straightened his posture, and faced Toraichi as if standing at attention.
"President Kuroda, before that, may I speak with you about business? As Mitsui of Mitsui Industries."
He introduced himself formally and handed over a business card. It read, 'Ryuji Mitsui, Senior Managing Director, Mitsui Industries Co., Ltd.'
"Our company is planning to expand our operations, and we are looking for workshops we can partner with. Having heard about your company through Teikoku Spinning and other channels for some time, I decided to visit you today.
I was deeply impressed by watching everyone work. I would like to discuss the details with you at another time, but would you be willing to cooperate with us as a partner company in our manufacturing efforts?"
Caught off guard by this sudden development, Toraichi froze, unable to keep up with the conversation. He had managed to suppress his joy at reuniting with Mitsui and finish the work in front of him smoothly, but he had never imagined a proposal for a business contract.
As Mitsui wore a puzzled expression at receiving no response, Kazumi—or rather, the Senior Managing Director—threw him a lifeline.
"Kuroda never turns down a job request. We will overcome any obstacles to accept it."
At her decisive words, Toraichi came to his senses, nodded vigorously, and added,
"I'm happy to work for a 40/60 or 30/70 split."
Mitsui laughed and said,
"Thank you. Regarding the business, let's make it 50/50. Let's grow together. Now, let's leave the business talk at that. Ma'am, may I borrow Tora for a little while?"
"Of course. Please take as much time as you need."
Kazumi had completely warmed up to Mitsui. Although today was their first meeting, she could trust a man who possessed the same craftsman's eye as Toraichi. She didn't know much about Mitsui Industries, but since they seemed to have connections with Teikoku Spinning, her expectations as the Senior Managing Director of Kuroda Manufacturing were rising.
"I'll make sure it doesn't interfere with tomorrow's work."
Mitsui urged Toraichi on and stepped out of the office first. The cold winter air flowed into the office, but a warm feeling welled up in Kazumi's chest, and she quietly placed her right hand over her heart.
The employees, who had been watching Toraichi's back as he followed Mitsui, were confused by the sight of a man they had never seen before and by Toraichi, who seemed more elated than they had ever seen him, especially since they didn't understand the situation. Kazumi shifted her focus and turned to the employees.
"Everyone, thank you for coming in since the New Year. Thanks to all of you, we've been able to secure new work. This is a small token, but please accept this New Year's gift from the President."
She handed out the envelopes she had prepared to the employees. Their expressions shifted from confusion to joy.
(This year is going to be a good one; I have to make sure of it. It's no longer the post-war era; it's a year to take flight.)
Kazumi was certain of Kuroda Manufacturing's leap forward this year.
