I have a weak will. I slack off easily.
I have launched a 'Fun Things Research Lab' for people like me.
'I feel like I need to do something, but I'm not doing anything.'
'When I'm alone, I inevitably go easy on myself.'
It is a place to act based on 'systems' rather than willpower, assuming the weakness of human beings.
In this article,
I write about why I created this lab and what I intend to do.
And I'm even quietly looking for partners and ideas.
While thinking I have to do something, I have to change...
'I have to do something, I have to change...'
While chanting that in my heart, I fiddle with my smartphone.
I scroll through short videos and stare at the occasional King's game ad.
Wrapped in my futon,
my precious morning time melts away with every swipe.
'This is bad, this is really bad...'
Even though I know that, I can't get up.
Held by the ultimate tag team of YouTube and my futon,
time just passes by helplessly.
With that sense of crisis in my chest,
another day ends as I think, 'I didn't do anything today either.'
...Wait, you too?
You're one of my kind.
Or rather, I suspect many modern humans can relate to this.
Humans are weak. We slack off easily.
Humanity is weak.
We slack off naturally.
I have things I want to do.
I feel like I have to do them.
But it's hard to actually take action.
I believe that's not because our will is weak or because we are lazy, but
because that's just how human beings are designed.
The Fun Things Research Lab was launched
so that 'modern humans who are weak by default'
can still find a trigger to try a little bit.
Challenges cannot be sustained by sheer willpower alone
"I'll do my best this time for sure."
"I'll get serious starting this month."
I've thought that many times, but I never kept it up.
Everyone has had that experience.
The reason is simple,
because we leave our challenges up to individual willpower and motivation.
At the Fun Things Research Institute, I wanted to change that.
——So,
I am going to force you to take on challenges.
Try doing one thing a month
Members of the institute have
only one mission.
Try doing one thing a month.
And report the results.
It's perfectly fine if what you do is really small.
I looked into something I was curious about a little bit
I tried using a new tool
I tried making something but didn't finish it
That is OK.
You don't need to achieve big results.
It's fine if you fail or stop halfway.
It's fine if it's incomplete.
The fact that you "tried it" is what matters most.
Compared to a perfect idea that was never acted upon,
a reality where you took action, even if incomplete, is far more valuable.
Imposing pressure on myself
That said, currently, I am the only member.
That's right.
Just so I can do my best, I gave it a grand name,
and even built a website to launch it.
It is an institute by me, for me, and of me.
Now that I've created it, I have no choice but to do it.
Now that I've said it, I have no choice but to do it.
By exposing it to the public,
I am putting pressure on myself.
The Fun Things Research Institute as a catalyst for action
The Fun Things Research Institute is,
to just get moving
to leave a record of the fact that I moved
to show proof that I did my best
It is a research institute for that purpose.
That said, if I'm going to do it anyway, I want to do 'fun things'.
For that simple reason,
it was simply named the 'Fun Things Research Institute'.
I end up messing with my smartphone.
While thinking I need to do something, I end up hitting the snooze button.
Even so, somewhere in my heart,
I think, 'I don't want to stay like this'.
As a catalyst for someone like me to get up,
I created a place to show my challenges to the public.
I am waiting for those who are masochistic enough to want their challenges forced upon them.
I also want to try doing something.
I want to try changing.
But, I can't keep it up alone.
For those people,
why not join the Fun Things Research Institute?
Won't you pledge to the public that you will take action?
Won't you promise with me to 'do one thing a month'?
What you do is simple.
Do one thing a month
It doesn't have to be finished
It doesn't have to be perfect
Just report that you 'did it'
That is all.
'I slack off when I'm alone'
'I can't move unless I make a declaration'
'I want to be monitored just the right amount'
I welcome the entry of such self-aware masochists. Just press the 'Join as a Researcher' button.
It's also fun to just go with the flow and join.

I'm also waiting for fun ideas.
I'll be honest.
My creativity has limits.
Even though I think I need to do something,
I can't think of the crucial 'something'.
My ideas are poor.
Even though I call myself a research lab, running out of ideas is my biggest enemy.
So, I have a request.
Is there anything you'd like to see someone who has a lot of pointless energy try doing?
I wouldn't do it myself, but I'd like to see someone else do it
It's a bit silly, but I'm curious
It doesn't have to succeed, I just want you to test it
Such rough ideas are very welcome.
'I wonder what would happen if I tried this?' That one sentence is enough.
I'm waiting for your wasteful and ridiculous ideas.
