Hello.
I am Take Gorilla, a
Birthday Picture Book Sommelier who introduces a picture book born on this day, every day.🦍

To you, born on May 6th,
Happy Birthday! Today is a memorable day when the picture book 'We're All Wonders' was first widely delivered to Japanese readers. As this story conveys, you, born on this day, are an irreplaceable 'wonder' existence.
'We're All Wonders'
Author: R.J. Palacio
Translator: Haruno Nakai
AlphaPolis
First Edition: May 6, 2018
Synopsis
10-year-old Auggie, who has facial differences, was stared at, avoided, and hurt by words thrown at him by other children. So, he puts on a space helmet and flies off into space on the wings of his imagination.
By looking down at Earth from far away on Pluto, Auggie gradually confirms how vast the world is and that it is natural for every individual to be different.
Highlights of this picture book
🔶Changing your perspective
The words spoken in the latter half of the story, 'If you look at people with a kind heart, you will always, always find a wonder.' resonate deeply in the reader's heart.
🔶Colorful illustrations
The illustrations, drawn on an iPad by the author herself—who also served as the art director for the novel 'Wonder'—are simple yet convey Auggie's delicate emotions directly.
🔶The bird's-eye view of space The scene where Auggie, hurt in the narrow world of school, gazes at Earth from space, quietly symbolizes the breadth of heart required to embrace diversity.
🔶#ChooseKind
'Choose kind over right.' This picture book does not fit into the frame of a 'story about a child with disabilities.' The author, Ms. Palacio, was inspired to write it by her own real-life experience when her son started crying after seeing a child with facial differences. It encapsulates the cruelty of 'judging by appearance' and the power of 'kindness' that transcends it.

'You can't change how you look. But you can change how you see.'—This message is a book that stays close to the 'anxiety of being different from those around you' that everyone carries somewhere in their heart, nurturing self-esteem and imagination for others.
In this picture book, Auggie's mother says to him: 'There is no one else like you. You are a wonder.'. These words should be gifted not only to Auggie but also to you, who were born today. There are many people in the world, but there is only one of you.
Born on this day, you may sometimes be hurt by the gazes or words of those around you. When that happens, like Auggie, please try looking at yourself from a slightly higher place.
You are wonderful just as you are, and you hold the potential to become someone's 'wonder'.
May your new year be a wonderful one, filled with 'kindness' and 'surprises'.
