What an 83-year-old's 'nightly Expo visits' taught me about habits that move the body and soul
Yesterday, on my way home from work, I dropped by the Expo.
This marks my 25th visit. Lately, due to the heat,
I've been enjoying a style where seeing one or two pavilions a day is enough.
I entered the venue around 6:30 PM, and while waiting in line for the same-day reservation terminal, the man in front of me asked, 'This is my first time using this machine.'
It turns out he has also visited more than 20 times.
He said, 'I want to see Pasona today, but I wonder if I can get a slot here.' It's true that popular pavilions are quite difficult to get into in the evening.
As we talked, the subject of age came up.
He said, 'Actually, I'm 83 years old.' I was genuinely surprised, as he didn't look it at all.
When I asked, he told me that in his 60s, he had bad knees and was in poor health. But he started by watching baseball, and eventually became a player himself.
He even went on to achieve great results in senior tournaments.
Now, he visits the 'Night Expo' almost every evening,
saying, 'I live nearby, so I could even come twice a day, right?' (laughs).
Then, he said something quietly—
'In the end, exercise and diet are what matter.'
In that simplicity, the life he had built up over the years shone through.
I am 61 myself.
In order to remain capable of moving for years to come,
I think about how to build upon my life 'now'.
It was a night when I took that question home with me.
Finally, the pavilions I saw this time were the Monaco Pavilion and the Malta Pavilion.
Although both were pavilions of small countries,
they were very impressive and highly educational exhibits.
I will save those stories for another time.
