Can you sell large furniture on Mercari? Shipping costs, packing, and the actual final price for 'Tanomeru-bin'

Hello, this is the Takahashi family (husband). In a previous article I wrote that I was planning to get a smaller desk because my current one is too big; this is the follow-up to that.
I recently sold the ceramic dining table (180cm wide, weighing about 100kg) that we had used for 5 years on Mercari.
I think people often give up on selling large, heavy furniture because they don't know how to ship it.
We were the same way.
This time, I will share which services we considered and why we chose Mercari, along with the process.
I'll tell you how it went.
Why we decided to let it go
We didn't have any major complaints about the table itself.
The ceramic top was resistant to heat and scratches, and it was sturdy because of its weight.
The only thing was a vague anxiety that 'as we get older, won't we be unable to move such a heavy and large table?'
I thought that letting it go now was the most liberating choice.
Options other than 'throwing it away'
In our home, we basically consider whether we can sell something before throwing it away.
This time, we considered the following four options.
1. On-site purchase (Treasure Factory)
They come to your home for free and appraise it on the spot. We actually had Treasure Factory come over.
However, they offered 8,000 yen for the table and chair set.
Since it was much lower than expected, we declined this time.
While the convenience is outstanding, I get the impression that the purchase price for large furniture tends to be low.
2. Yahoo Auctions
Among flea market sites, the fees are relatively low, so there is a possibility of selling it for a higher price.
However, for large furniture, you have to arrange the shipping company yourself and considering the effort of finding a shipping method, I didn't think it was realistic.
3. Jimoty
Since you can hand it over directly to locals, there are no shipping costs, which could be the most advantageous in terms of price.
However, since it becomes a person-to-person transaction, both the seller and the buyer have to move 100kg. Also, I was uncomfortable with having a stranger come to my home, so I decided against it.
4. Junk removal service
The strength is that you can let it go quickly and reliably.
However, in most cases, it costs money, and it is positioned as 'disposal' rather than 'selling'.
For us, who wanted to pass on something that could still be used to the next person, it felt like a last resort.
Why we chose Mercari + Tanomeru-bin
We ultimately chose Mercari because of the price relative to the market value and the existence of 'Packing & Shipping Tanomeru-bin,' which allows you to leave everything—packing, pickup, and delivery—to them.
The shipping cost is determined by size, and for this table, it was 18,500 yen for the 350 size (as of April 2026).
It is by no means cheap, but you can leave everything from the pickup to the shipping arrangements to them.
From listing to sale, about 4 months
I put it up for sale four months ago.
Initially, I listed it for about 70,000 yen.
Although it got about 40 'likes,' it didn't sell easily.
I received a few inquiries, but most were negotiations asking to 'come pick it up in person.'
I didn't want to have strangers coming to my home, so I declined.
In the end, how much did I have left?
Item price: 35,980 yen
(Breakdown: Table price 17,480 yen + Tanomeru-bin shipping 18,500 yen)
Sales commission (10%): -1,748 yen
Tanomeru-bin shipping: -18,500 yen
Sales profit: 15,732 yen
More than half of the item price is shipping. Many people might think, 'Wait, that's all that's left?'
Even so, I want you to remember the amount offered by the on-site purchase service. They offered 8,000 yen for the table and chair set. With Mercari, it was 15,732 yen for the table alone. Although it took the effort of waiting four months, the chairs also sold for about 1,000 yen at a recycle shop. As a result, I made about twice as much money.
Packing and removal were all left to the pros, and we didn't have to move the 100kg table ourselves.
For large furniture, 'if you aren't satisfied with the appraisal amount, sell it yourself using Tanomeru-bin.' This is our family's conclusion.
The flow on the day of pickup
Two male drivers came.
The company brought their own dolly and blankets for protection.
The pickup work itself was completed in less than 10 minutes.
My wife was worried the whole time that it might be too big and they wouldn't take it, but it ended much more easily than expected.
While we can still choose to keep or let go
The biggest lesson from this time was being able to rethink 'what was the value we were looking for?'
Five years ago, we chose this table thinking, 'Bigger is more luxurious and better for accommodating guests.'
At the time, that was the right answer.
But in reality, we only used it for guests a handful of times. Most of the time, it was just a space for the two of us and our cat.
Things we keep 'just in case we use them someday' usually never see that 'someday'.
Life changes, and we get older. While we can still choose to keep or let go.
That might be the most important thing for continuing a simple life.
I hope this becomes one option for those who are struggling with how to get rid of large furniture.
