3 Mechanisms to Automatically Generate 'Add-on Purchases' from Customers
Thank you so much
for opening this article😊
You've created a product and prepared a sales page.
But do you feel like
it ends with just one purchase
and you'd like to increase sales a bit more?
It takes time and money
to acquire new customers.
But there is actually a way
to give one more nudge
to customers who have already
decided to buy.
Order bumps,
upsells, and downsells.
Today, I will write about
these three mechanisms.
Recreating the 'add-on purchase' at the checkout counter online
Tirol chocolates or coffee
lined up at the convenience store checkout.
I'm sure you've had the experience
of picking one up, thinking, 'I'll add this too.'
Order bumpsare
the online version of that mechanism.
On the page where the customer
enters their payment information,
a small checkbox appears,
subtly suggesting, 'How about adding this product too?'
If they are interested, they just check the box.
There is no need to move to another page,
and it doesn't interrupt the payment flow.
For example, you can suggest to a customer
who is about to purchase a main course,
'Would you like to add the bonus template collection as a set?'
That is one way to use it.
The key is
to place a smaller offer
that complements the main product.
Because it is just an 'add-on',
they can add it easily.
Don't miss the 'one more item' right after purchase
After shopping online,
have you ever had a screen appear saying,
'Thank you for your purchase. How about this product too?'
Upsellsare exactly that.
An order bump is before the purchase,
but an upsell is displayed on a separate page
immediately after the purchase is completed.
In response to the suggestion,
'How about this product too?',
the customer can make an additional purchase with one click.
Re-entering payment information is not required.
Right after a purchase is
the moment when the feeling of 'I'm glad I bought from this person'
is at its highest.
That is why
it is easier for them to accept it.
For example, right after they buy an introductory course,
you suggest, 'Would you like to learn the practical application as a set?'
Even if they decline, there is one more chance
Suppose the customer passes on
the upsell suggestion,
thinking, 'I'll pass this time.'
Normally, that would be the end of it.
However, downsellingallows you to make one final offer.
one more proposal.
By saying, "How about this instead?"
you can present a slightly lower-priced product or
a simpler plan.
It's similar to the feeling when
you're struggling to decide on a top-tier model
at an electronics store,
and a clerk tells you,
"This previous model is also popular."
It's close to that experience.
For the customer,
it increases the options that suit them,
and for the seller,
it creates another chance
in a situation that would have ended with "no purchase."

What changes when you have all three?
If we organize the flow so far,
it looks like this.
Order bumps are for before the purchase:
"Add this too."
Upsells are for right after the purchase:
"How about this as well?"
Downsells are for when you've been turned down:
"Then how about this?"
You can make up to three additional proposals
to a single customer,
and everything runs automatically.
Once you set it up,
every time a customer makes a purchase,
the proposal is displayed automatically.
The system works even while you sleep.
You can increase sales per purchase
without having to gather new customers.
This is what it means to
"increase average transaction value."
Systeme.ioalso
has order bump and upsell features
fully prepared.
Since you can only create one course
on the free plan,
you will need to upgrade to a paid plan
to use them fully,
but the mechanism itself is simple to set up.
Summary
Order bumps, upsells, and downsells
are mechanisms that can increase sales
without disrupting the customer's buying experience.
The idea of increasing sales from existing customers
without relying on new customer acquisition
is something I feel is
perfect for solo entrepreneurs or side hustles
where resources are limited.
Just knowing that "increasing sales"
doesn't just mean "getting more new customers"
will change your future strategies.
