[For those wondering what SKILL is] Let's try it out with the free Claude plan!
SKILLs, AI agents, and so on.
I've been hearing these terms a lot lately.
I want to be able to use them, but
honestly, I don't really understand them.
Where should I even start?
I imagine there are some of you who are interested
but feel stuck
in exactly that way.
Actually, until I started using Claude,
I had no idea
what a SKILL was at all.
Today, I'm going to talk about how you can experience that "mysterious SKILL"
for free.
How "Make this a SKILL" changed things
The first time I encountered a SKILL was
when I was working on creating scripts
from video transcripts.
Every time, I would tell Claude the same things.
"Fix this part like this."
"Don't use this phrasing."
"Write it according to my rules."
One day, I saw some information on social media
that said, "You can create a SKILL by asking like this."
So, I decided to try it too,
asking, "Make this whole process a SKILL."
From then on, it was different.
Just by handing over the transcript,
a script that followed my rules—which I used to have to explain every time—
started appearing without me having to give any instructions at all.
I still clearly remember the feeling
of the hassle of typing out the same instructions every time
simply vanishing.
This was my first SKILL experience.
So, what exactly is a SKILL?
Let's take a moment here to organize what a SKILL is.
We are always giving the AI
various orders like "Do more of this" or "Do that."
A SKILL is something that summarizes those orders as rules from the start
so that you don't have to say them every time.
Take the instructions you always say out loud and turn them into rules beforehand.
By doing this, you can skip the instructions themselves each time.
If I say it's something similar to
ChatGPT's GPTs or Gemini's Gems,
I think some of you will understand.
The great thing about Claude is that
it will create one for you
just by asking, "Make this a SKILL" during your chat interaction.
But isn't that a paid feature?
Having read this far,
some of you must have thought this:
Surely you need a special paid tool for that.
I also assumed that SKILL was something
that could only be used in a special environment
for engineers.
But I was wrong.
You can use SKILL from the chat screen of the free plan as well.
If you open claude.ai in your browser,
the place to try it out right now is right there.
I actually tried it in the browser chat
Since it's hard to grasp with just words,
I actually tried it out in the browser chat.
I only did it in three steps.
First, I provided a transcript I had on hand and asked,
"Extract parts from this that could become ideas for a note article."
Then, instead of just listing them in bullet points,
it organized them into seven items from different angles,
such as problem-solving, failure avoidance, know-how, and demonstrations.
It even added, "Among these, this one is the strongest."
Next, when I asked it to "summarize this into an md file,"
it became a downloadable file.
Finally, I typed this:
"I want to do this sequence again in the future, so make it a SKILL."
Then, this time, Claude replied with
"Is this output format okay?"
and "How should we handle the target audience?"
It only asked two questions,
and once I answered them, the SKILL was finished.

All I did was press the button that appeared,
labeled "Save Skill,"
once.
It ended so easily it was anticlimactic.
With this, from next time on,
just by providing a transcript to a new chat,
it will perform the same organization without any instructions.

The first step you can take today
No difficult preparation is needed.
First, please try opening claude.ai.
From the available SKILLs,
turn on one that interests you
and try asking it to "do this for me."
To use SKILLs, the
"Code execution and file creation"
setting must be turned on,
but it is often on by default.

Once you get used to it, next, like me,
try saying "Make this into a SKILL"
for things you always ask the AI to do.
You will have one SKILL just for you.
Even SKILLs that looked difficult
turned out to be a one-button world once I tried them.
Things you thought were unrelated
will become things you can operate with your own hands.
Please experience that moment for free!
