[Humanitarian Aid Baghdad] Humor that turns a serious site into a happy one: Simon Peter, a man from Uganda

Humor is essential in serious situations.

Simon, a pro at managing people and money.
Aware, a logistician and pro at handling goods.
The three of us are a close-knit trio living in the same house.

Simon is basically laughing all the time.

He drinks a lot of green carbonated soda (melon flavor? apple flavor?) packed with chemical seasonings, saying it's good for his health!

He has a unique English accent,
and while I don't understand what he's saying,
he bursts into laughter all by himself, so I end up laughing along with him.

The other day, at the end of a medical meeting, a Mexican doctor said with a serious face,

I can't understand what Simon is saying. How much can everyone else understand?

(Everyone)... I can't understand him at all either.

Everyone in the room looked convinced, and the team reached a consensus.
It was a moment when a team that usually can't agree on anything became one.
We all burst into laughter.

When Simon and I were interviewing nurses in English to recruit them,

a participant said they couldn't understand Simon's questions and asked if the Japanese person next to him could ask them instead.

I even had to provide English-to-English interpretation, which I never expected!
(I guess by that time, I had become able to understand him! I was surprised myself.)

Simon has a truly bright personality,
and when I told him about this,

What? You can't understand what I'm saying because my accent is too strong? Hahahaha!

No solution or anything.
He just kept laughing.

I learned from him that even self-deprecating laughter can become a weapon to ease the atmosphere if it goes a bit too far.

A serious site.
A site where there is a battle between life and death.
The medical team, always in such an environment,
is helped by his laughter.

Laughing is the best solution.
