Walking through the labyrinthine alleys of Istanbul, there are moments when one’s feet simply stop.

In the corner of an old wall where the plaster has peeled away, layered like a pattern of time, I found a single word scrawled by an unknown hand at an unknown hour.

"Aşk" — "Love" in Turkish.

It was not a piece of refined calligraphy. It was a clumsy, tiny word, perhaps traced with a fingertip or scratched with a pebble. Yet, when the soft afternoon light touched a stroke of that word, the bleak corner of the back alley was suddenly enveloped in a warmth, as if a candle had been lit.
