In Islam, the 'Hadith'—the recorded sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)—is the fundamental pillar of faith, second only to the holy Quran. While the Quran is the word of God itself, the Hadith has served as a 'living textbook' showing how to put those teachings into practice in daily life. However, after the passing of the Prophet, the Islamic world faced the crisis of false words spreading, leading to the development of a unique and rigorous academic system known as 'Hadith Studies (Ulum al-Hadith).'

1. From Oral Tradition to Record: Early Preservation Efforts

During the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Companions (Sahaba) heard his words directly and witnessed his actions. Initially, documentation of Hadith was limited to avoid confusion with the Quran, but it was accurately memorized and passed down by Companions with excellent memories.

After the Prophet's passing, as the Islamic state expanded, the number of generations who did not know the Prophet directly (the Tabi'un) increased. This science of character evaluation is called 'Ilm al-Rijal' (the study of men). If even one person who had 'ever told a lie' or 'had a poor memory' was included among the transmitters, the reliability of that Hadith was considered significantly low.

3. The Golden Age and the Compilation of the Six Major Hadith Collections

Entering the 3rd century of the Hijri calendar (9th century AD), Hadith studies reached its golden age. Scholars used precise criteria to select only the authentic ones from hundreds of thousands of transmissions. The most prominent among them were Imam al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim.

Bukhari, in particular, set extremely strict criteria and included only those transmissions he scrutinized that were completely flawless in his 'Sahih al-Bukhari' (Authentic Hadith Collection). The 'Six Major Hadith Collections' (Kutub al-Sittah), which include the subsequent collection by Muslim and the works of other major scholars, are still widely recognized today as the most reliable literature in Sunni Islam.

4. The Classification System of Hadith Studies

Collected Hadith were strictly graded according to their reliability.

The highest reliability belongs to 'Mutawatir,' which is transmitted through multiple independent routes and is considered to have no room for fabrication, and 'Sahih' (authentic), which has a perfect chain of transmission. Following these are 'Hasan' (good), which is acceptable in content despite slight concerns about the transmitter's memory, 'Da'if' (weak), where the chain of transmission is broken or there is an issue with a person, and finally 'Mawdu' (fabricated), which is completely forged.

Conclusion: The Prophet's Legacy Living in the Modern Age

The history of Hadith studies is not merely a process of collecting old words, but a 'history of scientific verification' to convey the Prophet's guidance to future generations in its pure form. Thanks to the uncompromising efforts of scholars and their precise selection system, modern Muslims are also able to use the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from 1400 years ago as a highly reliable guide for their daily lives and faith.
