The story of how I got hooked on social media and made my daughter cry. Threads is dangerous.
This time, I will talk about the theme of
“How to have a healthy relationship with social media?”
.
For the past two or three weeks, I've been hooked on Threads.
As someone who wants to maximize time with my daughter,
I want to do homework and play with her after 5:00 PM when she gets home,
but lately,
I've been tending to get absorbed in my smartphone.
Whenever I have a spare moment,
I immediately check my phone,
checking to see if I got any likes,
or if I have any new comments.
If I get a comment,
replying to it becomes my top priority...
Daughter: "I'm home!"
Me: "Welcome back!"
Daughter: "Hey, Dad, today..."
Me: "Hmm, hold on a second..."
Daughter: "Dad, listen to me read out loud."
Me: "Okay! Go ahead and read."
Daughter: "Heave-ho, heave-ho, still the turnip won't come out..."
Me: "......"
Daughter: "Hey, Dad? Are you listening?"
Daughter: "Dad, Dad! Let's play UNO!"
Me: "Ah, wait, I'm sending an email right now."
Daughter: "Are you done?"
Daughter: "Not yet?"
Daughter: "..."
Daughter: "DAAAAAD!!!"
Me: "Oh! Sorry, sorry!"
Well, that's how it's been.
I'm really hopeless, aren't I? orz
Things like that have been happening for the past few days.
One day, I ignored my daughter when she got home
and was absorbed in Threads,
and before I knew it, it was dinner time!
"Oh no! I haven't started dinner!"
"Sorry! I'll make it in a hurry now f^^"
However, there was no reply from my daughter.
Actually, my daughter wasn't there...
Huh? Where did she go?
She wasn't in the living room.
The light was on in my daughter's room, but she wasn't there.
What about the bedroom? It's pitch black.
She's not in the bathroom either?
Huh?
Then, I heard a noise coming from the direction of the bathroom...
Oh? Is she playing hide-and-seek?
Thinking that, I approached quietly, and when I gently opened the door...
My daughter was sitting in the cold bathtub, sobbing.
I hate you, Daddy...
I completely messed up.
Daddy, you're the worst.
I am truly sorry.
My daughter, who might get angry sometimes, but never cries.
I made her feel truly sad.
I made her feel truly sad.
I reflected deeply that this must never happen again.
Don't get your priorities wrong.
It's important to be passionate about things, and I think it's wonderful to get so absorbed that you lose track of time.
Not being able to do anything else. Putting other things on the back burner. That might happen sometimes.
I don't think that in itself is a bad thing at all.
But you shouldn't lose sight of your purpose for doing it, right? f^^
The reason I'm doing content business and researching Threads and note is to maximize my time with my daughter.
I don't mind sacrificing my own time to achieve that.
But it's wrong to sacrifice my daughter's time to achieve my goal, isn't it?
You must not get your priorities wrong.
It's not just limited to Threads, but
social media really melts away your time.
Like ice on a hot griddle!
That's how quickly
time melts away.
That said, it is also a fact that
social media requires a certain amount of
time and effort.
Therefore, you need to
properly control how you spend your time.
For example, only checking other people's posts
for 10 minutes a day, morning, noon, and night.
Or making sure to finish 20 posts
before the kids get home.
Well, honestly,
even if you set rules...
I think that's a thing.
But I think setting rules
is better than not setting any at all.
In any case,
what should be the top priority...?
This is the one thing you must not get wrong.
Melt butter, not ice.
When I'm using Threads,
the time I feel my time 'melting away' the most
is when I'm reading other people's posts.
Of course, if you want to
grow your account,
it's important to read others' posts,
study viral posts,
and communicate
with other people.
But if someone asked, 'Are you really
'analyzing' the posts you're scrolling through?',
I wouldn't be very confident.
I often just end up lurking,
thinking I'm 'analyzing' when I'm actually just doing nothing.
(ROM = Read Only Member, just reading)
When you open the app, the home screen appears.
Then, posts start flowing in.
Before you know it, while you're just scrolling,
10 minutes have passed.
This happens, doesn't it?
At the very least, eliminate the time spent lurking.
Instead of just reading posts,
at least do some 'analysis',
or 'like' and 'comment'.
Even just with this,
I think you could use your time more effectively.
Just reading is like
melting ice.
It just evaporates and disappears.
If you're going to melt something anyway,
isn't it more meaningful to melt butter?
"More information equals better decisions" is a mistake.
I know that, but
even so, I end up opening it anyway.
Because if I miss out on useful information,
I might lose out!
I understand that feeling too.
To make good decisions or correct judgments,
you think having more information is better, right?
So, in closing, I'll introduce a little bit of
research data to wrap things up.
German psychologist Gerd Gigerenzer
asked American and German university students the following question.
"Between San Diego and San Antonio,
which one has a larger population?"
Please take a moment to think about it.
Both are American cities, but
the correct answer is "San Diego."
The accuracy rates were as follows.
American students: 62%
German students: 100%
Even though it's an American city,
the American students had a
lower correct answer rate.
Why?
The German students thought,
“I’ve heard of San Diego,
but I don’t know San Antonio,”
so they chose San Diego.
On the other hand, the American students
knew both cities, so they
ended up considering unnecessary information.
In other words,
having too much information
became a factor that lowered their accuracy.
We tend to assume that
“the more information you have,
the better your decisions will be.”
This is called information bias—
However,
“the more information you have,
the better your decisions will be”
is not necessarily true.
When there is too much information,
it can lead to overthinking,
which can sometimes result in the wrong decision.
No matter how much information you gather,
or how many good reviews you look for,
it doesn't really help you
make a good final decision f^^
If you know this,
you might be able to reduce
the stress of being swayed by social media,
fearing that you’ll miss out on useful information.
Summary
Thank you for reading
until the end.
I wrote about what I reconsidered
after getting hooked on Threads
and making my daughter cry.
Here is a summary of the lessons learned.
Don't get your priorities wrong
At the very least, stop being a lurker
You don't need to collect a lot of information
If you feel like this hits home!!!
please be careful ^^

P.S.
By the way,
I apologized to my daughter with all my heart,
and we had a proper talk.
And now, when I'm with my daughter,
"I need my daughter's permission to use Threads"
has become the rule.
The fact that she didn't say "You're not allowed to do it"
shows what a very kind daughter she is.
I'm the one who caused the worst-case scenario
of making my daughter cry, but
for what it's worth, I've written an article about the results.
If you are interested in Threads,
I hope you read this article
so you don't waste your time like I did
and make your loved ones sad,
and hopefully take a shortcut.
