To live a healthy and happy life, some stress is necessary
This time, I will talk about the theme of
“there is necessary stress and unnecessary stress.”
According to a survey by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare,
it seems that more than half of people
are carrying stress
related to their work.
“I don't want to see my boss,”
“It's a pain to apologize to clients,”
“I don't want to go to the drinking party.”
I myself,
carried these kinds of stresses
when I was a company employee.
If possible, we would like to be freed from such stress
and live a life without stress.
If there were no stress,
how healthy and happy a life
we could lead.
However, even with stress,
there is good stress and bad stress.
If you want to live a healthy and happy life,
just being freed from stress
is not enough.
Trees grown in a greenhouse wither quickly
In America,
an experiment was conducted comparing
trees grown in a greenhouse
with trees grown outdoors.
According to this experiment,
it was found that trees grown in a greenhouse
grow quickly, but
they also wither quickly.
Trees grown outdoors
are exposed to the stress of wind and rain,
so they become stronger to resist it.
On the other hand, trees grown in a greenhouse
grew without stress,
which weakened their vitality,
so to speak.
Similarly, for humans too,
to live healthily,
a certain amount of stress is necessary.
For example, exercise.
Exercising is, so to speak,
an act of putting stress on the body.
Between people who exercise
and people who do not,
it is clearer than day which one is healthier.
Cells are damaged by stress,
and by repairing them, they become stronger,
so to speak.
It is the same even if it is not exercise.
For example,
“I want to earn money easily.”
That sounds like a dream, doesn't it? f^^
Well, there's no such thing as a free lunch, but
let's assume there is...
In that scenario, there is no
stress of 'making an effort'.
Since you haven't made an effort,
you can't handle it when trouble arises.
Like a tree grown in a greenhouse,
it will wither away immediately.
Making an effort,
spending your own money,
or failing
might seem like stress you'd want to avoid if possible, but
this kind of stress that helps you grow
is actually necessary to make you stronger.
People who have studied hard,
piled up effort,
and overcome failure
are strong in both business and work.
Stress also affects happiness
A certain amount of stress
makes people stronger,
but it also affects happiness.
People tend to feel higher levels of happiness the more
they have invested.
Money spent
Time spent
Effort made
The greater the total amount of these,
the higher the sense of happiness.
This is called the paradox of effort.
In short,
even if there are hardships,
by overcoming them,
you can feel happiness
.
You're happier when a post you wrote yourself gets a 'like' than when a post written by ChatGPT gets one, right?
It's nice to have someone wear a scarf you bought, but it's even happier to have them wear a scarf you knitted, isn't it?
My family goes camping once a month, and
camping is actually incredibly stressful (laughs).
It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter.
There are tons of bugs, and...
While getting bitten by mosquitoes,
you have to start a fire
and cook.
But,
the food you make after going through all that trouble
tastes many times better than usual.
A tent is
basically the same
as sleeping on the ground.
If it rains,
the sound of the rain is noisy all night long.
Frankly speaking,
hotels or inns are
overwhelmingly more comfortable.
So why do we still go camping?
Because feeling the inconvenience and stress
creates a gap from daily life,
allowing us to experience a sense of happiness.
Staying at a luxury hotel or inn
is also a wonderful experience, but
the experience of camping really
has something irreplaceable.
You should escape from unnecessary stress!
To be healthy and feel happy,
a certain amount of stress is necessary, but
it doesn't mean all of it is necessary.
Naturally, there is also unnecessary stress.
For example, stress at work
Colleagues who only talk bad about others
Painful drinking parties
Long commute times
Walking on eggshells around your boss
A workplace without freedom
This is all about my past, but
this kind of thing is truly unbearable orz
It doesn't help my personal growth at all, and
just because I endured it,
I don't feel any happiness.
Unpleasant feelings just accumulate,
and I just become unhappy.
This is unnecessary stress.
Enduring this kind of stress
does not lead to health or happiness.
For example, a "workplace without freedom."
There are even research results suggesting that a workplace with little freedom in work
is worse for your health than smoking.
I wrote about this in detail in this article ^^
It is not the stress you put on yourself for your own growth
or to make yourself stronger, but
stress imposed by the environment
only erodes your health and happiness.
If you are exposed to this kind of stress
every day,
your physical condition will worsen,
your mental health will suffer,
and happiness will drift away.
You should try to avoid it as much as possible so you don't get stressed,
or you should just get out of such a situation
as quickly as possible.
You should run away from stress that erodes your health and happiness,
but you must not try to choose an easy path
just to escape.
Not running away from stress that helps you grow,
such as honing your skills
or investing in yourself,
is what makes you stronger
and increases your level of happiness.
By the way, I quit being a company employee
and was liberated from the stress that erodes health and happiness.
Now,
I am improving my skills,
reading books to gain knowledge,
writing notes,
and only putting stress on myself for growth ^^
