Masato's Real Work Series (Transfer to Tokyo Headquarters)
At that time, life insurance companies had transfers every two years.
You would rotate between three locations: the front lines of sales, the office that oversees those sales, and the headquarters.
The order of this rotation varied from person to person.
Since I started my career on the front lines of sales,
my next assignment was at the headquarters.
And it was the Tokyo headquarters, at that.
Because it was right in the heart of Tokyo, the commute was hell to begin with.
Back then, the subways didn't have air conditioning; they just had fans spinning.
And they only blew hot air.
My bag wouldn't fall, and my arms were sticky with sweat.
Every day began with me being exhausted just from the commute.
And to top it off, the department I was assigned to was real estate.
My work life began in a place completely different from life insurance.
There was something that surprised me on my first day of work.
Usually, if work started at 9:00, everyone would be there by 8:30 back in the sales office,
but at headquarters, it felt like everyone arrived at 8:55.
Unlike the sales office, the desks were made of wood and had desk lamps.
The managers were lined up by the windows, reading the newspaper every day.
There were even strange seniors who would just smoke at their desks.
And so on.
Like the big shots who wander around looking for mahjong players once evening comes
It was a completely different kind of department
However, surprisingly
When it hits 12:00 for lunch break, everyone rushes down to the cafeteria first thing
I wondered, do you really want to eat lunch that badly?
At the time, we still had to work on Saturdays
When I worked at the sales office, I normally worked until around 6:00 PM on Saturdays too, but
At headquarters, almost everyone goes home the moment the 12:00 chime rings
It took me a little while to get used to this difference, but
In reality, I got used to it in the blink of an eye
I had no idea at the time that this relaxed environment
would turn into a hellish work schedule after autumn
Next time, I will write about: System development, even though it's a real estate company?
