What I've leanred from an AI Summer program 2024 hosted by Matsuo Yutaka Laboratory.

Intro

From August to October last year, I participated in an AI entrepreneurship program hosted by the Matsuo Institute. We formed a team of five members, each from different fields of expertise, and I contributed as the team coordinator. Our project focused on developing a business plan to streamline the labor-intensive grape thinning process for grape farmers using AI.

Why is grape thinning so crucial yet so challenging?

This meticulous process(摘粒作業 in Japanese), often consuming 10-12 hours daily for an entire month, involves:

🍇 Removing excess grapes to enhance the aesthetic appeal and tidiness, crucial for the high standards of the Japanese market.

🍇 Ensuring optimal nutrient distribution, leading to better taste and quality for each grape. The work is physically demanding, performed in the summer heat, and requires hiring significant seasonal help, leading to stressful conditions for the farmers.

Our interdisciplinary team, comprising five students from diverse university departments, collaborated daily – both online and offline – to devise a solution. We developed a comprehensive proposal and a prototype for an AI-powered system designed to alleviate this burden for grape farmers.

The response was incredibly validating! When we presented our concept and prototype to the farmers, their excitement was palpable. One farmer even exclaimed they'd be willing to invest ¥20 million in such a solution if it were available! This was a powerful affirmation of the potential impact of our work.
