"Mother's Day, I ended up just sending a LINE"—The night I had an AI sort through the guilt of not being able to call
Thursday, May 14, 9:00 PM.
I opened my smartphone and looked back at the LINE message I sent to my mother four days ago (May 10).
Just the words "Thanks for everything." No stamp, either. I sent it after 8:00 PM on Mother's Day itself. I typed it in a rush, sent it in a rush, and closed it in a rush.
It has been read.
There is no reply.
My mother is someone who usually replies to my LINE messages within 10 minutes. Yet, four days have passed and there is no reply.
I probably know that she isn't angry. She is likely thinking, "I don't know how to reply to this." If she replies with "Thanks for everything" too, it's too formulaic, and if she writes "You don't need to celebrate me," it would be a lie.
My mother is probably a little relieved that I "remembered her," but she is also thinking, "Is this all?"
On the Thursday night, four days after Mother's Day, I was on the sofa, regretting my actions from four days ago.
"Next year for sure" comes every year, but I miss it every year

Come to think of it, I repeat the same thing every year.
In the first week of May, I resolve to "send a gift in advance this year," in the middle of May I realize, "Oh, when is Mother's Day again?", at 8:00 PM on the second Sunday of May I type "Thanks for everything" on LINE, and on the Thursday of the following week, I feel this regret.
"Next year for sure" is triggered every year at 9:00 PM on the second Sunday of May.
However, if I wait until next year, I will forget again.
Giving an AI a "Mother Profile" to create a map of her interests
I tried talking to ChatGPT.
Five seconds later, the AI's response.
The fifth point really hit home: "I'm happier hearing about what you're struggling with than hearing you show off your filial piety." This probably applies to my mother, too.
Having it draft 5 versions of a "letter sent two weeks late"
The second prompt.
Out of the five suggestions returned, the second one suited me best.
I kept it to 300 characters. A length that can be handwritten on a single sheet of stationery.
I even liked the phrase "I don't have any particular reason to talk" myself. For my mother, a call with no specific purpose is probably more welcome.
Setting up a "three-call plan before Father's Day"
The third prompt.
The three-call plan that was returned.
I added these three appointments to my calendar app. The title is "Mom - Call with no specific purpose".
Thursday night, gathering five tools
I took the tools out of the drawer to write the letter.
The fountain pen is a Pilot Kakuno Clear Barrel Fine (F). Since the barrel is clear, I can see how much ink is left, so I don't have to worry about running out while writing. It's an entry-level fountain pen in the 1,000 yen range, but it writes perfectly well.
The stationery is Midori CB Letter Set Brown. It's a 30-sheet letter set with simple brown lines. This suits my mother better than a letter set with lots of decorations.
The memo pad is from the Midori Ippitsusen series. It's for sending a short "recent update note" before next week's call.
The gift is Ginza Senbiya Ginza Fruit Gelee 12 pieces (new flavors). It can be stored at room temperature, has a relatively long shelf life, and comes in a pack of 12, so my mother can share it with her colleagues at her part-time job. It's an amount that won't become an "excessive gift," which my mother dislikes.
And, I opened the Kindle version of "How to Get Your Point Across" (Keiichi Sasaki, Diamond Inc.) from my bookshelf. I re-read the chapter on "the technique of turning no into yes" and rewrote the final sentence of the letter.
In closing

Mother's Day is one day, but the relationship is 365 days.
There is no point in saving the guilt of a Thursday night until next year's Mother's Day. If I just finish writing the one-page letter, ordering the gelee, and setting the three calendar appointments tonight, the guilt will be converted into concrete action.
There is no need to blame the version of myself from four days ago who just sent a LINE message. I just need the version of myself tonight to make the call next Sunday.
"I don't really have anything in particular to talk about, but..."
Perhaps, that is what my mother was waiting for.
