Watching Toy Story with my 4-year-old son and sharing our perspectives
Yesterday, it was so hot that we didn't feel like going anywhere, so we decided to watch a movie at home.
My husband and I discussed that Pixar is the best choice for a movie that our 4-year-old son would also enjoy.
Apparently, Pixar has a policy of producing films that don't exceed the 1 hour and 45 minute mark, which is the limit for maintaining a child's concentration.
My husband told me that they intentionally set limitations for themselves, such as breathing life into inanimate objects, and hearing about the behind-the-scenes of their content creation made me, as a parent, even more curious about Pixar.
Since my son loves toys, we chose Toy Story, and the whole family watched it for 1 hour and 21 minutes without touching our phones once.
Movies are fun, but I really love talking about them afterward.
That's why I'm not the type who finds much appeal in watching movies alone.
Talking about our favorite characters was so much fun because we could share the unique worldviews each of us holds.
The differences in our perspectives are interesting.
First, when I asked my son who his favorite character was, he answered Woody.
The reason was,
Because he wears a cool badge on his clothes. It looks like a police officer and it's cool!
Kai-chan wants to be a police officer. You can catch thieves and help people, and everyone is happy.
I felt like I understood why my son is so particular about his belongings and clothes.
Come to think of it, the reason he recently started karate was because he wanted to wear the uniform.
And he has a strong desire to make people happy.
On the way home from daycare, he holds the door open for people to pass through, and he looks so satisfied when they say 'thank you'.
On the other hand, my husband's favorite character is Slinky.
I suppressed the urge to ask, 'Really? Him?' and asked for his reason.
He's kind and a good boy. Plus, I like that he feels like a quintessential American toy.
Indeed, I remembered that Slinky had the saddest look on his face in the scene where he was looking for help from the window of Sid's house because he loved Woody.
My husband is always observant of people and is quick to notice their good qualities.
I feel that his attraction to the rarity of toys not found in Japan reflects his values of always wanting to do things that others don't.
And then, there's me.
My all-time favorite has always been the Little Green Men.
With their three eyes and cute form, they left a strong impression on me when I was young, even though they didn't have much screen time.
It was almost love at first sight.
I also love their attitude of not resisting fate and just going with the flow.
Perhaps it was a reflection of my desire to be composed, not to feel anxious or uneasy, and to think, 'This was fate, it will all work out somehow.'
No matter what art we encounter or content we watch, the way we see things and what we focus on differs because it passes through our own personal filters.
It was a Saturday afternoon that made me realize once again how interesting people are.
