[Introduction]
Are you satisfied with your work-life balance?
Are you exhausted in both mind and body from trying too hard?
Are you suffering from the gap between your ideals and reality?
This was exactly me two years ago.
Nice to meet you, my name is Yuzu Suyama.
I am a mother of a 4-year-old son, and while working as a part-time employee, I also work as a side-hustling financial planner (mainly for household budget consultations) and a web writer.
Looking at my profile alone, some might think I lead a smooth and successful life. However, that is not the case at all.
To be precise, it "wasn't" the case.
When I returned to work, I spent my days asking myself: Is this a job worth doing even if it means putting my child in daycare during a time when he needs me so much?
Is this a job I have to do even at that cost?
I realized that I felt relieved when I was away from my son, whom I would leave at daycare after he cried and screamed the whole time we were together, morning and night. I panicked, wondering if it was really okay to go on like this, and feeling that I couldn't achieve my ideal parenting.
I also felt a deep anxiety that I wasn't nurturing the foundation of his heart, which is so important during this time of building trust with my child.
People often say, "Everyone goes through this until they get used to it," but I couldn't just swallow those words and ignore them.
However, quitting my job wouldn't solve the problem either. Realistically, money is necessary for our livelihood, our family's future, and our dreams.
After much worrying, I came to the conclusion: "I will change to a way of working that suits me now and allows me to work from home."
But what can a mere housewife with no skills, track record, or connections do?
After much deliberation, I felt that what I needed most was to face myself and properly understand my current situation and problems.
To organize my life, I studied by reading various books and posts, and I tried every idea I could possibly incorporate.
By digging deep into myself—the self I had assumed was capable of nothing—I was able to remember that I had obtained a financial planner qualification to organize my household finances and that I had often been praised for my writing.
As a result, I was able to take on the challenge of working as a financial planner and web writer on the side.
In this book, I have compiled only the methods and ways of thinking that were particularly effective during my own trial-and-error process.
Through the habits introduced in this book, these changes happened to me one after another:
・I became able to manage my own mood.
・I was able to let go of the belief that "I must do this."
・I found what I wanted to do.
・I gained a sense of conviction that I am choosing my current path myself.
・I became able to buy what I want with my side income.
Also, following these changes, there were positive shifts in how I interact with my family:
・I became able to focus on the quality of time spent with my child rather than the quantity.
・I became more aware of my child's growth, good points, and interests.
・My spouse and I are now able to face the same direction and cooperate with each other.
This book introduces ways of thinking and habits that will change your life within five major frameworks: "Note-taking (written self-analysis)," "Money," "Lifestyle," "Relationships," and "Relationship with Children."
Among them, Chapter 1's "Note-taking" was the most effective for me in terms of knowing and organizing my own problems, so I have placed it first.
By "writing" to take stock of my life so far, it was very helpful in clarifying my strengths, weaknesses, and what I already possess.
Some of you might think, "I'm already so busy, I can't do this!" but why not spend 10 minutes—no, let's start with just 5 minutes—for yourself?
I wrote this book for working moms who, like my former self, are struggling with the balance between parenting and work, with the hope that you will "cherish yourself" and "be able to balance work and parenting without sacrificing yourself." I would be very happy if this book becomes a trigger for your action.
Through this book, I hope that as many working moms as possible will cherish themselves, leading to smiles and happiness for both the moms and their families.
July 2023, Yuzu Suyama
To everyone who has read this far, thank you so much.
I look forward to seeing you in the rest of the book.
