[Background/Objective] Radio Taiso, a traditional Japanese exercise program, may be useful as a coping strategy for frail elderly people during the COVID-19 pandemic. This phase II trial examined the adherence and safety of the program and explored the potential effectiveness of home-based Radio Taiso.
[Methods] This assessor-blinded, parallel, randomized controlled trial involved community-dwelling Japanese elderly people who were frail or pre-frail. The 58 eligible participants were randomly assigned to either an intervention group or a control group. The intervention group performed Radio Taiso for 3-5 minutes, 1-4 times a day, for 12 weeks.

Feasibility criteria were set at an implementation rate and retention rate of 75% or higher. Safety was monitored by evaluating all adverse events reported by participants during the intervention period, regardless of causality. Regarding effectiveness, mobility and health-related QOL (HR-QoL) were used as items to allow for clinical interpretation, evaluated using the modified short physical performance battery (SPPB) and SF-36, respectively, and examined exploratorily.
[Results] Both the implementation rate (83%) and the retention rate (100%) met the pre-set feasibility criteria. Eleven adverse events were reported, but they were considered unrelated to the intervention. In the intention-to-treat analysis, there was no clinically significant difference between groups in the change in SPPB scores (-0.4 points, 95% confidence interval [CI], -1.2, 0.3); however, the intervention group had higher scores in the mental component of HR-QoL than the control group (-1.4 points, 95% CI: 7.8).

[Conclusion] Preliminary data indicate that a phase III trial focusing on the mental aspects of HR-QoL as the primary outcome is feasible.
🌱 So What?: What did I find interesting?
I like Radio Taiso.
That length is just right.
And as an exercise intensity, it is also just right.
Furthermore, for some reason, it carries a sense of being 'official,' which makes me feel like it is a reliable path.
And they say that Radio Taiso contributes to improving the QOL of frail elderly people.
Personally, it is strange that there was no effect on mobility or physical function, but perhaps it is because 3-5 minutes is a small amount (Does).
Or perhaps it is because the intensity of Radio Taiso is weak (Intensity).
For both of these, adding the legendary 'Radio Taiso No. 3' might solve it.
This No. 3 includes things like dual-tasking, and the exercise intensity is also a bit higher.
This video allows you to watch 1-3 without interruption, so I recommend it (the SuperHuman family is also practicing it).
I hope you will try practicing it.
And I have one more thought about Radio Taiso.
They say, 'Names reflect reality.'
A name should, and ought to, well represent the nature or substance of that thing or person.
So, what about Radio Taiso?
Is it being watched on YouTube now?
There are probably few people who actually practice it while listening to the radio.
The name and the reality are drifting apart.
It is fine for now.
Because those who practiced it on the radio are still alive.
From now on, a generation will come that asks, 'Why is it called Radio Taiso?'
At that time, it might become a thing of the past because the name no longer makes sense.
Names are important.
It might be necessary to consider this.
