4 Commonalities Between Writing and Composing

The other day, I released a piece of music I composed.

Due to a lack of confidence, I released it quietly, but thankfully, I received many comments.
I have nothing but gratitude.

By the way, when I released the song, I suddenly thought to myself.

Could there be commonalities between writing and composing music?

So, I decided to reflect on it from my own experience of doing both.
As a result, I found four commonalities.
Let's look at them one by one.

1. There is the agony of creation

Unless you are a true genius, no one can write or compose effortlessly.
There are overwhelmingly more people who create through trial and error.

I am no exception, and I repeat trial and error in both.

In the case of composing, I change the time signature or try playing in a different scale.
I add or remove chords to consider ease of listening, or drastically change the accompaniment, using various methods to add arrangements until I somehow complete it.

When writing, I change the order after finishing, or check the sentence endings.
In some cases, I add text or, conversely, cut out unnecessary parts.
I check from a third-party perspective to see if the writing is difficult to understand.

In my case, writing does not take as much time as composing.
Even so, I feel the effort put into completion is similar.

Neither task is easy (bitter laugh).
Still, I continue because I love it.

2. Combining parts to complete a work

In writing, we use parts called words, and in music, we use parts called notes.
Even if the parts are different, the act of combining them to create a single work is the same for both writing and music.


Isn't the beauty of the combination, which gives the work flavor and color, one of the true pleasures of both writing and composing?

3. Ability to express thoughts and scenes

In writing, you can express thoughts and scenes with words, and in composing, with melodies and chords.
It is up to the creator to decide the flow.
Whether it's joy, anger, sorrow, or pleasure, or a beautiful scene that touches the heart,



by putting them into words or sounds,
they can be conveyed to many people.
。

4. Different interpretations by different people

The writing or music released by the creator can often be interpreted differently depending on the knowledge and perspective of the receiver.
However,


it is precisely because there are different ways of receiving it that one can freely enjoy the work.。

Writing and composing may look different at first glance,
but I feel that at their core, they are connected.
They are both wonderful creative activities,

and I believe they are both excellent ways of expression.

Moving forward, I want to continue enjoying both writing and composing in my own way,
following my heart.
