The Roundest Fireworks Anywhere
"I'll show you the roundest fireworks you've ever seen."
Back in college, my boyfriend at the time told me that, and we went off to a certain fireworks festival together.
However, he didn't take me to the festival venue, but to a path between rice paddies.
My anxiety grew.
We had only been dating for about four months.
I trusted him, but what was he thinking?
Whether he knew how I felt or not, he stopped the car.
He told me to get out, so I did.
It was a front-row seat to the fireworks.
There was no one else there but us, and just as he said, the fireworks were perfectly round.
"I like the fireworks here better than the ones in Kanto, and you can watch them in peace. I wanted to show you this at least once."
You see, at the time, he and I were in a long-distance relationship between Kanto and Aichi (my hometown).
It was a surprise he had planned for our brief date.
I was so happy that he had gone to such lengths to treat me, and I still remember it clearly even now.
The fireworks I saw from that path between the rice paddies that day were indeed perfectly round and beautiful.
But honestly, it was a summer night where I was happier about his feelings than the shape of the fireworks.
<Afterword>
It's been a while since I wrote a love story, so I'm feeling a bit embarrassed.

This essay is a repost of what I submitted for the After-School Writing Club's #SaturdayWriting prompt, "Summer Festivals and Fireworks."
It's a fond memory from a long time ago.
I also have memories of sparklers, but since that's a bit of a scary story rather than a love story, I chose a fun one. It's the kind of story about the messy side of women.
By the way, for summer festivals, I had thought about writing a record of observing guys trying to pick up girls.
