[Must-Read for Beginners] 3 Common Mistakes Made by Strength Training Beginners | Explained by a Licensed Physical Therapist to Help You Avoid Wasted Effort
Introduction
"I started strength training, but my body isn't changing the way I expected..."
Have you ever had that experience?
In fact, many beginners are not lacking effort, but are taking the long way around due to common initial mistakes they tend to make.
When I first started strength training, I also did things like:
training every single day
only chasing heavier weights
thinking that buying lots of equipment would lead to results
Looking back, I was doing nothing but inefficient things.
That is why in this article, based on the knowledge I gained as a licensed physical therapist and my own personal experience, I will introduce three mistakes that beginners should avoid.
Just by knowing these three things, you can significantly reduce the chances of wasting your time.
Mistake 1: Training every day
"I want to change my body quickly."
That feeling is very important.
However, muscles recover and grow during rest, not during training.
If you keep training the same body part every day, it cannot recover sufficiently, which can actually decrease your efficiency.
If you are a beginner, start by aiming for 2 to 3 times a week.
Creating a pace you can sustain is what leads to the best results.
Mistake 2: Only chasing heavier weights
"Heavier weight = more muscle"
If you push yourself too hard with that mindset, your form will break down, and it will become difficult to stimulate the muscles you originally intended to train.
Furthermore, it can also cause injuries to your shoulders, lower back, and other areas.
As a beginner,
focusing on "proper form" rather than "weight"
is important.
Once your form stabilizes, the weight you can lift will naturally increase.
Mistake 3: Buying too much equipment
Before starting strength training,
dumbbells
a bench
resistance bands
a belt
supplements
some people try to buy everything at once.
However, you don't need everything from the start.
What I recommend is,
first, just get one set of adjustable dumbbells.
Even with just this, you can efficiently train your entire body.
And it is sufficient to add more items little by little only when you truly need them.
▶ I have been using adjustable dumbbells for over two years, and they are still my top recommendation as the first piece of equipment for a beginner to purchase.
Important things to avoid wasted effort
What people who get results from strength training have in common is,
"not aiming for perfection, but continuing."
It is.
Even if you only do it 2-3 times a week, your body will definitely change if you continue for half a year.
There is no need to rush.
Focus on moving a little further ahead than you were yesterday and keep going.
Summary
The mistakes that strength training beginners often make are,
working out every day
chasing only heavy weights
buying too much equipment
These are the three.
It is okay not to aim for perfection from the start.
Acquiring the right knowledge and building up small successful experiences is the shortest path to changing your body.
