[The Mermaid Who Devours Prayers] Prologue

Every night, there was a boy who would take off his glasses and visit the lake.

Standing by the water with his vision blurred was because he harbored the wish that "it wouldn't matter if I fell in," yet he lacked the weakness to take that step himself.

The one who spoke to such a boy was a young mermaid who had never once devoured a "prayer."

Longing to save a human, she drew close to the boy's suffering, and as they talked every night, she gradually guided his heart toward living.

The boy was saved by his encounter with the girl whose name he did not even know, and the girl, too, believed she had saved someone precious.

The small words exchanged every night slowly filled their mutual loneliness and quietly bound their hearts together.

This is a quiet fantasy horror story that depicts a "salvation" that cannot be reached by kindness alone.

I expanded on the idea from an illustration I originally posted last year (with very few lines of dialogue) and did a major edit for this #CreativeAward2026 #FantasyNovelCategory.

The idea had been in my heart for a long time, so I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to give it shape like this.
