K's Recommended [32 Suspense Movies] Personal Ranking
Hello. I'm K, and I don't feel much anxiety in my daily life. Instead, I use movies to supplement the thrill that's often missing from my routine, like a supplement.
As in the famous quote by director Hitchcock, suspense (anxiety) is the foundation of cinema, and as a genre, it is perhaps the broadest and most beloved by many. It creates anxiety and tension, amplifies and sustains them, and then resolves them at the end to provide relief, or conversely, delivers an even greater shock.
"In short, everything leads to suspense."
Since I handle 'Romantic Suspense,' 'Crime Suspense,' and 'Legal Suspense' separately, here I will introduce suspense works that do not fall into those categories, based on my own subjective view as K.
32nd Place: 'The Whispering Tongue' - 58 points
A story about a child who contracts tetanus and the nursing process. Is it medical suspense? Or perhaps more like horror. A devastating blow to your mental state! Repeatedly! Repeatedly!! If you like horror movies, you must check this out.
31st Place: 'Children of Men' - 58 points
For unknown reasons, humanity can no longer produce children, and the countdown to extinction begins. For those who like 'sekai-kei' sci-fi suspense.
30th Place: 'Last Night in Soho' - 58 points
A story about a psychic girl from the countryside who uses her ability to resolve an unsolved case from the past.More than the content... if you are a fan of Anya, this is a must-watch.
29th Place: 'Swimming Pool' - 58 points
A suspense film about a writer's delusions.Highly recommended for those who enjoy solving the mysteries of complex films. I wish this had been made when Charlotte Rampling was a bit younger.
28th Place: 'Rebirth' - 64 points
This is not a story about a summer vacation research project.A kidnapping suspense film about motherhood, questioning whether the birth mother or the adoptive mother is the true parent.I'm not necessarily a fan, but Eiko Koike was great!
27th Place: "The Birds" 64 points
Humanity vs. Birds.Perhaps the origin of animal panic movies. From the opening to the end, there is no clear cause and no real progress, but... the fact that it remains thrilling and interesting throughout is surely due to Director Hitchcock's skill. He is truly the 'God of Suspense.' There are romantic elements, but he is not the 'God of Romance'...
26th Place: "Persona" 64 points
Just as the title suggests.A psychological suspense film revolving around the duality of human nature. The nurse and the patient are in a relationship where they complement each other. After all, the profession of nursing cannot exist without patients.
25th Place: "A Big Hand for the Little Lady" 65 points
A good-natured familygets caught up in a millionaire's poker tournament. A shocking ending.
24th Place: "The White Tower" 66 points
Medical suspense. The blatant hierarchy of the medical profession. When people gain wealth and power, they lose their morality and kindness. And conversely, those who lack morality and kindness are the ones who gain wealth and power.
23rd Place: "All About Eve" 66 points
The surface and inner self of humans. 'Intelligence' ishow well you can hide or fake your inner self from others...that is the kind of movie this is. Because what is praised in the world is always the surface of a human. The inner self is not something worth looking at.
22nd Place: "Raise the Red Lantern" 67 points
A suspense film about the strife between wives in a polygamous system. The vivid crimson is clearly a symbol of love and hatred. There are curses, bloodshed, affairs... it's just a total mess. If you like dramas about women's conflicts, this is a must-watch. Even in the midst of all that, the third wife, Meishan, was a source of comfort.
21st Place: "Diary of a Country Priest" 67 points
It is a story just as the title suggests, but contrary to its peaceful tone, it is unsettling from start to finish and nothing good happens.A clergyman abandoned by both God and his followers...You should look for another job...
20th Place: "The Mist" 69 points
They were just shopping at the supermarket when they were attacked by mysterious giant creatures. The ultimate level of depressing ending! Too shocking.
19th Place: "Dancer in the Dark" 70 points
A neighbor's trap, and then a death sentence...Along with director Haneke, director von Trier has a natural talent for making people feel unpleasant. It's a musical film, which K is not fond of, but the ending is so super shocking and depressing that it blows that away!
18th Place: "The Magician" 70 points
Magic vs. Science. It's a theme common in light novels, but it's actually been around for a long time. Personally, K prefers "magic." I'm a fan of old things, after all.
17th Place: "A Separation" 70 points
Husband vs. Wife. You might say that's just a normal marital spat, but... Religion, nursing care, marriage, parent-child relationships, truth and lies—it's a very deep social-issue film. K is non-religious, but I was made to realize the power of the Quran.
16th Place: "Bicycle Thieves" 70 points
A theft suspense about a father and son searching for a stolen bicycle.Shocking, convincing, and tear-jerking regarding the most unexpected culprit.
15th Place: "Teorema" 70 points
A bizarre suspense beyond human intellect. It touches on the essence of happiness and social systems, incorporating social-issue elements even within its divinity.
14th Place: "The Servant" 72 points
Master vs. servant. What is this guy's goal? You have to be careful when hiring some unknown person.
13th Place: 'Woman in the Dunes' - 73 points
Freedom and bondage, change and adaptation, anxiety and stability... I admire the bizarre idea of expressing these through sand.It is a fable about the bondage one chooses through free will. as well.
12th Place: 'Inland Empire' - 73 points
This is a dissociative suspense film that goes beyond the dimensions of being 'absurd' or 'difficult to understand.' It is trulya movie like having a nightmare. If there is anyone who can understand it in one viewing... that person must be sick.
11th Place: 'Cría Cuervos' - 73 points
A story about an aunt who takes care of three young sisters who lost their parents. Taming three little crows seems very difficult. The 'Spanish Civil War' is a motif that appears with high probability in Spanish films. And then there's adultery, poisoning... It's full of heavy themes, but for some reason, it was a good work that felt heartwarming.
10th Place: 'A Man Vanishes' - 76 points
A documentary film chasing the mystery of a disappearance case. However, it has a sudden and shocking ending, like something out of a slapstick comedy.
9th Place: 'The China Syndrome' - 76 points
A social suspense film that exposes the darkness of a nuclear power plant. I don't really recommend this to people living near a nuclear power plant.
8th Place: 'The Village' - 76 points
Many people say that Director Shyamalan's masterpiece is 'The Sixth Sense,' but K thinks it is this film.A movie about the sadness that strikes a peaceful village and overcoming it.
7th Place: "The Game" - 79 points
A happy ending, which is rare for a suspense film. A younger brother gives his older brother an invitation to a game for his birthday—a story of troublesome brotherly love.
6th Place: "Opening Night" - 81 points
This also has a happy ending, which is rare for suspense.A film that contemplates aging and youth.I wonder if everyone thinks about this once they hit their 40s? Especially women. There's no point in worrying about it, and it'll just make you age faster. What's important is being yourself and staying young at heart!
5th Place: "Samurai Rebellion" - 81 points
The cruelty of samurai society and the love between a husband and wife.Perhaps women are more capable of making decisive choices in a pinch than men; it's so cool! I think the title is confusing, but I saw the true potential of Japanese cinema! And you can even see Etsuko Ichihara's breasts...
4th Place: "Harakiri" - 85 points
"Bushido is found in death."
The final sword fight uses real blades! Every Japanese person should watch this. And if a foreigner asks me for the best Japanese film, I would recommend this one.
3rd Place: "The Shining" - 87 points
The film that sparked K's love for cinema. The agony and curse of a writer who can't get his pen moving?I personally consider this the King of Suspense. But the final shot of "Jack frozen in ice" is a point deduction...
2nd Place: "Dogville" - 90 points
I don't think there is any other film that captures Nicole Kidman so charmingly. I'm sure fans have seen it, but if you haven't, why not give it a try? The content is...
a tale of revenge following exploitation.Sounds cliché? But since it's the nasty director von Trier, both the exploitation and the revenge are highly stylish.
1st Place: "Doubt" - 90 points
Priest vs. Sister. Which one is telling the truth? No, rather than the truth, which one is right as a human being? Perhaps God's morality and human logic are incompatible. By the way, K casts his vote for... the angelic Amy Adams!
That concludes K's [32 Suspense Movies].
