Puku at the Kankodori General Store: A bubbly sponge and a sleepy cat. A quiet afternoon, household tips | 3M Scotch-Brite
Finally, a hint of autumn, just a little.
The sunlight has softened, and the breeze now passes through with ease.
Puku is on his favorite chair by the window.
He is stretching out, exposing his belly to the sun.
As for me, I decided to tidy up the sink in the shop where no one ever comes.

Even today, the door bell does not ring.
The goods on the shelves haven't said a word since morning,
as if time itself were asleep.
Or so I thought.
Goo...
Puku let out a small sound, like a sleepy murmur.
It was a voice that sounded like it had stopped in the middle of a yawn.
He stretched his front paws out and froze in a pose like a ghost.
“...What are you doing?”
The words slipped out before I knew it. There was no reply, and he drifted back to sleep.

On an afternoon like that,
I found a worn-out sponge in the corner of the sink.
Its edges were frayed, and before I knew it, its color had faded too.
When I happened to open the drawer,
lined up inside was a new orange sponge.
When I touched it, the slightly wavy shape fit perfectly in my hand,
making me think, “This looks like I won't have to use much effort.”
The moment I opened the bag,
Puku reacted to the crinkling sound and hopped down from the chair.
Then, he sat on the new sponge as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
“That’s not a place to sit, you know...”
Puku turned his face away.
Only his tail was swaying slightly.

The new sponge has a slightly different texture on the front and back,
with fine particles for tea stains and dullness,
and larger particles that seem to work effectively on stuck-on messes.

I just 'stroke' it without applying any pressure.
It's so satisfying to see things come off so easily that I ended up washing more than I needed to.

At home, I have enamel pots, non-stick frying pans,
and dishes I've collected little by little,
so I spend my days washing them while thinking, 'I don't want to scratch my precious things.'

This sponge has just the right balance of softness and reliability,
and I felt like my usual housework became just a little bit lighter.
I use one sponge in three steps.
1. First, for dishes like cups and plates
2. When it gets a little worn out, move it to the stove area and sink
3. Finally, for cleaning small places like the washbasin or inside the shoe cabinet
Because the material is durable,
I'm grateful that I can use it for a long time by changing where I use it.
Since it is antibacterial,
not having to worry about 'when should I replace this?' is a small comfort.

The washed glass,
wrapped in the light of an ordinary afternoon, looked like it was sparkling.
The sound of something becoming clean
is actually a little good for the soul, too.
No customers came to the shop today,
but even so, I feel like it was a good day.
The new orange sponge
is as gentle as if it had soaked up today's light,
and it lathered up softly in my hands.
I feel like tomorrow will be just a little bit better.
