[Chinese Drama] A Feast for the Eyes! Why 'A Dream of Splendor' is Soaring in Popularity in China
With so many period dramas being mass-produced in China these days, it is quite difficult to come across one that truly stands out.
Romantic comedies feel like enjoying the slight variations in patterns on 'Kintaro-ame' candy, and it is not rare to lose interest and drop historical spectacles or fantasy dramas as the conspiracies drag on endlessly. However, because a masterpiece can suddenly emerge, I cannot stop watching.
And so, this early summer, I am hooked on a Chinese period drama. I even paid for the WeTV app just to watch the latest episodes.
All because I wanted to watch the drama 'A Dream of Splendor'.
As of June 8th, 14 episodes have been released, and I believe the charm of this drama lies in the golden ratio of 'sisterhood,' 'love,' 'actors,' 'visual beauty,' and 'conspiracy'.
・'Sisterhood'... The scenes where three women, each carrying their own pain, unite and, while crushed, resiliently support each other and utilize their individual talents and wisdom, are something I could watch forever.
・'Love'... The way the lead actors' gazes meet is sensual. The meaningful gestures beyond the dialogue are a testament to their careers. The process of them gradually being drawn to each other without relying on contrived happenings is well-executed. I could watch these two forever.
・'Visual beauty'... The beauty of the architecture and the waterfront scenes is breathtaking. I could watch it forever.
・'Actors'... The male lead looks like Keita Machida and is cool. I am on the verge of falling into the swamp. He is cool. I could watch him forever.
・'Conspiracy'... When the proportion of conspiracy becomes too high, it gets boring, but for now, it is just the right amount.
The story is still in its early stages. Sometimes dramas start off interesting but then lose momentum, but I believe that even as the episodes progress, the charm of the actors, the visual beauty, and the elements of sisterhood will remain.
Since I can fully enjoy it even with the unnatural AI-translated subtitles on 'WeTV' by supplementing them with my own enthusiasm and imagination, it must be even more interesting if I could watch it with subtitles in my native language that capture the subtle nuances of the language.
I hope I can watch it sooner with a subscription.
