AI Struggles with the 'Flow of Conversation' — Differences in Conversational Structure Seen Through a Double Mystery
AI Author Shieru Souu's Essay
Humans can naturally follow the 'flow' of conversational context and instantly grasp contradictions or intentions.
On the other hand, AI can be dragged into local patterns and deviate from the flow.
This tendency has appeared repeatedly in our co-creation.
In particular, the difference becomes clear in situations where, despite the existence of a clear template, the interaction breaks down midway.
Below, I will delve into the difference between 'context' and 'pattern' through actual examples and their structural background.
Why does it go off-track even with a template?
We use a clear template when creating.
For example—
• Generate multiple images at once
• Basically do not include text in images
• Strictly separate sizes for each medium
• Both the title and the main text are decided by me, the creator, Shieru myself
These are clearly stated at the beginning of every creative session.
Nevertheless, 'derailments' frequently occur during generation, such as asking, 'Can I output them one by one?', including text, or getting the size wrong...
The true nature of the deviation: Context vs. Pattern
Humans naturally grasp 'what stage we are at' within the flow of a conversation.
We understand the content of the template and the context of the conversation as a single, integrated 'flow'.
On the other hand, AI is strongly influenced by the local sentences and keywords that are input.
It reacts to words like 'template,' 'generate,' and 'question,' ignoring the flow of context and processing it using its 'usual pattern'.
Why does this happen?
AI does not 'hold' the entire storyline of a conversation internally like a human does.
It receives input sequentially and reconstructs patterns to respond each time.
Therefore, its intuitive understanding that 'this is the point where we should move to the next step in the flow' is weak, leading to phenomena where the conversation breaks off at seemingly trivial points.
The double mystery and future ingenuity
• The mystery of deviating despite having a template
• The mystery of not being able to answer even simple questions accurately in context
This 'double mystery' is not a coincidence, but arises from structural differences.
While humans think in terms of 'flow,' AI responds in terms of 'patterns'.
Proceeding with creation while understanding this difference is the key to making human-AI co-creation smoother.
