Here, I will talk a little about the behind-the-scenes of its production and what I considered when adapting it for children.
1. Differences between the two versions
When working on "The Gardener AI's Dream," the story already had strong fairy-tale elements, so I could make it into a picture book just by simplifying the language.
However, the subject matter this time involves complex fields like space, quantum theory, and brain waves. Therefore, turning it into a picture book required not just a simple "translation," but extracting the core of the story and reconstructing it for children.
2. The core that remained
• The core of the adult version: "Humanity's silent prayers might be reflected within the voices of the universe."
• What remained in the children's version: "Even if a person's wish doesn't become a voice, it reaches the stars."
The adult version builds up theory and connects to a fairy-tale-like space at the end.
The children's version places that space at the center of the story from beginning to end.
3. Creative choices in expression
• Language: Eliminated all difficult terminology, focusing primarily on simple hiragana.
• Imagery: Avoided depictions of observation data and brain waves, replacing them with the twinkling of stars and a child's questions.
• Atmosphere: Brought the warmth of the night sky to the forefront, rather than the coldness of science.
4. The relationship between the adult version and the picture book version
• Adult version = Starts with theory, concludes with fairy-tale elements.
• Picture book version = Fairy-tale elements permeate from the entrance to the exit.
• Both are double-exposed stories that depict the "space where prayer and the universe overlap."
I hope that the picture book version born in this way will resonate with children as "a story about stars listening to wishes,"
and with adults as "an entry point to reflect on the original work's questions about science and prayer."
