When writing this story,
there were not many things I decided at the start.
However,
regarding what not to write,
I decided that at a fairly early stage.
I will not write about justice.
I will not write about courage.
I will not write about salvation.
Dealing with the subject of false accusation,
these seem like inevitable directions.
But in this story, I chose not to make them
the driving force of the narrative.
The decision not to make silence the theme
This story deals with "silence."
However, it is not a "story of silence."
I did not want to make silence
a virtue,
a sin,
a symbol,
or an opportunity for growth.
I wanted to place silence
as an act that was rational
under certain conditions.
It is nothing more, and nothing less.
Silence is not a personality.
It is not a value judgment.
It is simply the result of adapting to conditions.
About the protagonist
I did not want to make the protagonist
a good person,
a weak person,
or an excellent person.
He
chose silence
so as not to destroy his own life.
That is
neither a decision to be praised,
nor a decision to be condemned.
Therefore,
I tried to write as little as possible
about his inner self.
It is not that I suppressed emotions.
I simply did not make emotions the protagonist.
About inner conflict
Regarding this point,
I was conflicted until the very end.
It was theoretically possible
to not depict the protagonist's inner conflict at all.
However, as I neared the final draft,
I realized that
this was becoming an excessive demand
on the reader.
Not making conflict the theme
and not showing the existence of conflict at all
are not the same thing.
What I ultimately chose
was to show it just once, in a way that offered no escape.
I do not explain.
I do not resolve.
I do not provide a solution.
I simply
make the protagonist recognize the fact
that the conditions are in conflict.
Beyond that,
I do not write.
On the testimony
The testimony
is not the climax.
It is not a righteous act,
a courageous decision,
or an act of atonement.
The testimony
is an act that occurred as a practical life decision.
As a result of the cost of silence
and the cost of testifying
reversing,
the act simply occurred.
Therefore,
I depicted the scene of the testimony
in a businesslike manner.
I did not build it up.
I did not imbue it with meaning.
On the ending
This story
solves nothing.
A wrongful conviction moves toward correction through the system.
But,
life does not return to how it was.
The protagonist, too,
is not praised.
Is not saved.
Does not reach enlightenment.
They simply
continue to live
in a state where they have lost the premise of silence.
That is all.
Relationship to the previous work
In the previous work, 'The Person Who Left No Name',
no action took place.
In this work,
action does take place.
However,
both
depict lives that are passing through.
What differs is
the conditions.
The condition that the world does not need the individual,
that is.
The condition that silence is rational,
that is.
Conditions change.
Even if the personality does not.
Finally
This story
does not guarantee
that it will be understood.
However,
it also does not fear
being misunderstood.
Where the reader stops.
What they read into it.
Whether they feel they cannot read anything into it at all.
These things
are left to the outside of the story.
What I have written here
is not the correct answer.
It is a trace of the choices not taken,
and a record of the imperfection I have accepted.
I believe that is enough.
