📝 Returning to Theory: Future History and the Structure of Silence
🌿 Introduction — The Destination and Starting Point of the Story
In Part 1, I discussed the overall concept of the series and the differences in construction order, and in Part 2, I talked about the behind-the-scenes of the "Research Group where Science and Folklore Intersect."
And in this Part 3, I will finally look back at the creative background and structure of the Theoretical Volume that supports the core of the story.
The Theoretical Volume was constructed first in the actual writing process.
However, it was released to the readers last.
There was a clear intention behind this, based on the structure of the story surrounding the theme of "silence."
🧭 1. The "Gap" Between Creation Order and Publication Order Once More
One of the characteristics of the "Star Eater" series is that the order of creation and the order of publication are different.
It can be organized as follows.

1. Theoretical Volume (Observation, Hypothesis, Future Historical Composition)
2. Main Story (Narrativization: "The Night the Night Sky Fell Silent")
3. Records Volume (Records and Dialogues Based on the Theory)

I adopted this order to plant "questions" in the readers before "answers".
If the theory is presented first, there is a danger that the story will become a mere "parable" for the theory.
Therefore, I intentionally placed the theory at the end, structuring it to present the theory only after fostering a question about silence within the reader through the story and records.
🌌 2. Background of the Theoretical Concept
The theoretical section is, so to speak, a "hypothesis book on the Star-Eater phenomenon," combining astronomical observation, cultural anthropology, and future historical assumptions.
During the creative stage, I built it around the following three elements.
Observational Foundation: Precisely designed to align with actual observation records, such as the observation logs (time, equipment, tracking, equatorial mounts, etc.) of the moment all starlight in the sky was lost simultaneously.
Cultural Traditions: Memories of "silence" etched into poetry and oral traditions, such as the songs of the Waira and village myths.
Future Historical Perspective: An expansion of the timeline that captures the Star-Eater phenomenon not merely as a single night's event, but as a "beginning" etched into future history.
By layering these three, I was conscious of depicting the Star-Eater as both a "scientifically recorded event" and a "silence that connects stories and the future."
🧠 3. The Intersection of Theory and Story
The role of the theoretical section is not merely "explanation."
Rather, it lies in providing "one perspective" to the questions that readers have cultivated within themselves after going through the story (main volume) and the records (record volume).
Presenting theory first → Readers read the story as "understanders"
Presenting theory last → Readers experience the story as "observers/participants," and then compare their own interpretations with the theory
Through this order, a space is created within the reader regarding "how to perceive silence," and a space where theory and the reader's own interpretation intersect is opened.
📜 4. Future History and the Structure of Silence
In the theory section, I position the events of Star Eater within a future history.
That moment when the night sky of Lumina Village fell silent is not merely a night in the past, but a "starting point" that will be passed down to the future.
Observational records analyzed by future astronomers
Legends passed down through song and poems of silence
Discussions among future people attempting to decipher both
The narrative timeline is connected to the future, and silence is depicted not as an "end" but as a "beginning"—this is the core of the theory section.
🌿 5. Looking Back on the Series
The "Star Eater" series has a triple structure:
Theory → Story → Record
Story → Record → Theory

And the reader's experience order of Silence → Dialogue → Understanding,

This was not only a single story, but also an experiment in how to arrange the three layers of story, record, and theory.
The "story of silence" that began under the quiet night sky now continues into the future, and into the inner sky of each and every reader.
