Goodbye <Fisheye View>

The following is a piece posted on Facebook on January 15, 2025, regarding the conclusion of the Hokkaido Shimbun column <Fisheye View>. Since the final piece, 'Spontaneous Healing,' was about my research at Heidelberg University before I took up my post at Hokkaido University, I felt as though the circle had come full, returning to the starting point.

I received notice from the person in charge at Hokkaido Shimbun that the <Fisheye View> column will end this March.

<Fisheye View> is a column written by university faculty members in Hokkaido on a rotating basis. It was originally published in the culture section of the evening edition, but moved to the morning edition following the discontinuation of the evening edition last year.

I contributed my first piece, 'Kanda Kabul Cafeteria,' on March 31, 2003, and reached my 101st piece with 'Spontaneous Healing' on October 29 of last year. 101 Fisheye Views—that's a nice number, isn't it?

That means I have been writing for over 20 years! This almost overlaps with the period I spent as a university faculty member in Hokkaido, so it is deeply moving.

Looking back at that list (below), the interests I had at the time and the places I visited come back to me. Although it was a struggle to fit everything into the 650-character limit, I also enjoyed the pleasure of thinking about what to write next.

It is sad that this column will disappear, but I suppose this is the flow of time. I would like to thank the reporters who were in charge, the readers who read my work, and the many people who helped me in writing these manuscripts.
