Is wood construction at a disadvantage for soundproofing?
Specialized contractors and architects post on their websites that "wood construction has low sound insulation performance" and is "at a disadvantage for soundproofing measures."
Is that really the case? On what grounds do they evaluate it as being at a disadvantage and having lower performance than ALC or RC structures?
I believe that as long as current condominiums, RC, and steel-frame detached houses use GL methods, insulation boards (foam materials), and ALC panel construction, wood construction can secure equal or better sound insulation performance if structural reinforcement and soundproofing construction are added at the same thickness.
In fact, the wooden soundproof rooms I am in charge of have been able to secure D-50 or higher with about 40mm of soundproofing construction from the existing surface. The total thickness, including exterior materials, framing, and interior materials, is about 190mm (including soundproofing materials).
The exterior walls of condominiums, RC, and steel-frame detached houses are about 240mm or more in thickness, including the interior. The sound insulation performance is about D-50 to D-55. *If GL methods or insulation board methods are not used, there is a sound insulation performance of about D-55 to D-60.
If I make the thickness the same 240mm or more with my living soundproofing design specifications, D-55 or higher is possible. It cannot be said at all that wood construction is a structure with disadvantageous sound insulation.
Judging only by preconceptions and information on the internet leads to incorrect evaluations.
I think it is wrong for architects and specialized contractors who do not know wood soundproofing design to lightly say that wood construction has low sound insulation. They do not understand because they do not analyze the buildings they have designed and constructed themselves, nor do they research effective soundproofing design.
If they verified actual objects or studied historical buildings, they should be able to understand that even wood construction has high sound insulation performance. Old wooden buildings had buildings that used soil or plaster inside the exterior walls to increase fire resistance and sound insulation performance, which is a traditional construction method.
Wood has higher sound insulation performance than ALC, concrete blocks, or RC walls of the same thickness, provided there are no cavities or gaps in the joints.
In my wood soundproofing design, I can fill the interior with glass wool or rock wool to secure sound insulation performance higher than that of ALC or RC houses. This can be achieved with a structure of the same thickness.
Since wood construction can basically be configured by separating the "ventilation/air layer," "sound insulation layer," and "sound absorption layer," even in a soundproof room, conventional underfloor ventilation and wall cavity ventilation can be secured as they are. That is the policy of my wood soundproofing design.
You cannot understand the essence from information only on the phone or website for soundproofing consultations.
Even if you look up information on the internet or ask experts questions over the phone to hear their answers and policies, you actually cannot understand the important content.
It is often the case that you notice important matters for the first time by reading and understanding the points from books and specialized materials (including manuals) with your own effort, measuring actual examples where soundproofing construction was performed, and considering your own living experience and experiments at home.
The effort to steadily accumulate efforts and correct existing cases, desk theories, and manuals is the most important. You cannot understand the essence unless you design, construct, and practice it.
Even if you feel like you have understood it on the internet or over the phone, nothing will remain after time passes.
Browsing or copying on the internet without using your head, or hearing over the phone, does not really stick to people without ability. Rather than browsing the outline of specialized books on the internet, the work of copying the points while reading the actual books remains in your memory more. It becomes your own knowledge as much as you used your head.
