The figures of those who survived the postwar period sometimes surface in our hearts like a flickering light.

To sustain life, they chose survival over righteousness, held the hands of others when they had no choice but to rely on them, and at times swallowed their pride to support themselves in the corners of the black market.

The choices made by the grandmother in "The Eternal Zero" were also a form of love—bitter, yet certain—that was dedicated entirely to "surviving."

Grittiness, unconventional thinking, and the power to execute.

These are the strengths needed even in the modern age when the moment of truth arrives.

I believe that such execution eventually becomes "courage," quietly nurturing the core of who you are as a person.

That is why I want to say this.

This is something on an entirely different dimension from "stories of being toughened by others."

It is not about the evaluation of others, but something like a fire that wells up from within yourself.

On nights after you have run through the day.

In those moments when you suddenly want to acknowledge your own weakness, I want you to gently place the word "courage" in your heart.

It will become a light that illuminates the tomorrow that is yet to come.

Now, please get some rest tonight while gazing at your own small flame.
