People Who Cannot Read the Room

There are people who are said to be...
unable to read the room.

When I ask AI, it says that reading the room means "to sense the atmosphere, situation, and the feelings of others in a given moment, judge what one should or should not do, and act appropriately."

The point here is likely the part about "what one should or should not do."

Generally, when people talk about someone who cannot read the room, they often refer to "someone who does what they should not do in a given situation." However, if you think about it carefully, isn't the opposite—"someone who does not do what they should do in a given situation"—also someone who cannot read the room?

Lately, people who cannot read the room by stepping out of line are often criticized. Large companies with many layers of hierarchy work by constantly seeking approval from superiors, paying meticulous attention to avoid stepping out of line. And superiors also favor those who do not step out of line. That is because it is easier for them.

Therefore, I feel that many people have become the type of person who cannot read the room by not stepping out of line. This is because by constantly seeking approval from superiors and proceeding with tasks while confirming every single step, they become unable to acquire the skill of "sensing the atmosphere, situation, and the feelings of others."

Unless you push the limits and repeat trial and error, you cannot understand the subtleties of things.

In other words (paradoxically...), unless you are occasionally called "someone who cannot read the room," you cannot truly read the room in the real sense.
