The Pied Piper of Hamelin

Recently, with all the noise about compliance, blatant power harassment and moral harassment by bosses have become less common everywhere compared to the past.

This means that many managers no longer directly criticize their subordinates. It has become mainstream to convey that "what you are doing is wrong" by using euphemisms that are somewhat understandable yet vague. In this day and age, there is no other way.

Instead, many companies have become obsessed with numbers.
This is because numbers themselves are free from power harassment and moral harassment.
In this day and age, numbers are the only thing for which direct expression is permitted.

Goals are set by numbers, and results are evaluated by numbers.
However, even if the standard values are unconvincing or the thresholds are unclear, you are not allowed to ask direct questions about them. Everything other than the numbers must be expressed euphemistically.

That is why companies churn out e-learning courses.
With e-learning, bosses can be prevented from making careless, direct remarks. Naturally, those e-learning courses are packed with content for learning how to use "euphemistic expressions."

Furthermore, bosses frequently hold one-on-one meetings with their subordinates.
In these meetings, the boss euphemistically conveys to the subordinate that "since I am using euphemisms, you should also use euphemisms."

As a result, euphemistic expressions spread throughout the entire company, and the numbers begin to take on a life of their own. And so, the company slowly moves in the direction indicated by those numbers.

It is just like the children in the fable of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

The children, unaware of where they are heading, just keep walking blindly, lured by the sound of the flute.

There are several versions of the ending to the fable of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

One of them tells of how, among the children who were led away, a blind child and a mute child worked together to return to the village and tell the villagers what had happened.

What you see with your eyes is not necessarily the only truth.
The direction everyone is heading is not necessarily the right one.
If you think something is wrong, say it is wrong.
