Steroids and Insomnia
Since my SLE flared up and my steroid (prednisolone) dosage reached 30mg, I haven't been able to sleep without sleeping pills.
My sleeping pills are Dayvigo 10mg and Lunesta 2mg.
I think the usual dose for Dayvigo is 5mg, but it didn't work at all, so I was prescribed 10mg (which seems to be the maximum dose).
Even then, I couldn't sleep, so Lunesta was added.
I also started taking a herbal medicine (Yokukansan) that is supposed to calm nervous excitement and make it easier to fall asleep.
...but even so, I mostly couldn't fall asleep, and even when I did, I would wake up every 2 to 3 hours.
And because of the Dayvigo, I have terrible nightmares.
When I have nightmares, I feel even less rested, and I'm already exhausted when I wake up in the morning (crying).
This went on for about two years, until my prednisolone dose got down to about 8mg.
Now that my prednisolone has been reduced to 7mg, I can finally sleep for 5 to 6 hours straight if I take all these sleeping pills, but I still can't sleep without them.
On the other hand, I feel like the medication is still in my system until morning, making it hard to get up and leaving my brain foggy in the morning.
Thinking maybe the herbal medicine was too strong, I've recently tried stopping it.
And maybe, just maybe, my mornings have gotten a little better...?
However, even if I can reduce the herbal medicine, the sleeping pills have become like a security blanket, and if I reduce the amount even a little, I can't sleep, so I'm still taking them now that I'm on 7mg of prednisolone.
I still have nightmares and mornings are still tough, but I tell myself it's better than not sleeping at all.
Actually, now that I can get a decent amount of sleep, I wonder how I managed to work back when I really couldn't sleep at all...
I felt frustrated because I couldn't keep up physically and my brain wouldn't work due to lack of sleep, but I still did my best to do what I could each day...
I really worked hard back then...
When I couldn't sleep, besides medication, music and YouTube were my go-to.
In particular, the 'meditation while lying down' video by yoga instructor Nun on YouTube,
with Nun's gentle words and voice saying, 'This Yoga Nidra is said to have a healing effect even greater than sleep,' really saved me.
May I be able to sleep peacefully for even a little longer tonight...
