My Personal "Sexy Male Vocalist" Championship
your sexy voice
My recent article about Fujii Kaze
In that article, I wrote that singers with "sex appeal" like Fujii-san are rare. So, I decided to organize my thoughts on who I personally consider to be "sexy" singers.
Fujii Kaze is definitely a sexy singer.
Similarly, I would like to "note" about artists with sexy singing voices, going back through the decades in a championship format where I make the entries myself.
◇ ■ ◇ ■ ◇ ■ ◇ ■ ◇
Even though it's a championship format, I'm not deciding on a winner, just making "entries," but I will introduce the top 8.
I've also chosen songs that I find to have sex appeal. (By the way, apparently when I sing these songs at karaoke, they sound kind of lewd. 🥺)
#1. Ken Hirai
First up is "Uta Baka" (Song Idiot), Ken Hirai-san.
Sweet love songs and light pop are great, but I can't help but feel that this person's voice is meant for ballads.
Singing in a whisper is nice, but personally, I find the ones with painful breaths and raw breathing to be especially sexy.
For this entry, I'm choosing "Elegy," released in 2007 as the theme song for the movie "Ai no Rukeichi."
#2. hyde (L'Arc~en~Ciel)
The second person is L'Arc~en~Ciel's vocalist, hyde-san.
I'm entering with "Kasou," one of the three singles released simultaneously in July 1998.
The bewitching feeling of the falsetto intertwining with the rolled-R singing at the beginning, like ♫ scattering into pieces, the flowers ♫, is wonderful.
#3. Kazuya Yoshii (THE YELLOW MONKEY)
The third person is THE YELLOW MONKEY's "Robin," Kazuya Yoshii-san.
Yoshii-san's songs have a feeling of gradually raising the voltage within a single track, and I always get the image of being taken further than the listener expects.
The exhilaration of 1997's "BURN" is especially exceptional, and I'm so captivated by its emotional intensity that I get goosebumps. (The "day" in ♪~ soft thoughts day are, far away~ ♪ was also impressive. ← Too detailed!)
#4. Tsunku♂ (Sharam Q)
Now, the fourth person is Tsunku♂ from Sharam Q.
Since he underwent a laryngectomy due to laryngeal cancer, we can no longer hear his singing voice, but the many masterpieces he gave us during his Sharam Q days will never fade.
From his debut, he had a strong aura of nightlife, and his mysterious singing voice is his charm, but I feel that the big hit "Zurui Onna" is the highlight of that!
#5. Takao Tajima (ORIGINAL LOVE)
Now, we are entering the second half of the entries.
The fifth person is Takao Tajima from ORIGINAL LOVE.
As I mentioned in the article about Fujii Kaze earlier, this person's singing voice also has sex appeal. I feel a sense of dandyism in his slightly detached way of singing.
The entry song is, of course, "Seppun" (Kiss).
I once made a summary page of songs about kissing, but I couldn't include it at the time because the title was in Japanese, but finally....
#6. Kyosuke Himuro (BOØWY)
Now, the sixth person is Kyosuke Himuro, also known as Himurock.Kyosuke Himuro.
His sticky, rolled-tongue vocals are still alive and well even after going solo!
Not just his singing, but even his casual gestures at any given moment make for a picture-perfect Himurock! He is still cool to listen to even now.
#7. Koji Tamaki (Anzen Chitai)
Now, there are only two spots left, and the seventh person is Koji Tamaki of Anzen Chitai, whom I wrote about in an article before.Koji Tamaki.
His singing ability is truly overwhelming.
Among them, the song I am entering as the most lewd... no, sexy song is "Jirettai"! When I listen to it, it really makes my heart ache with impatience.
#8. Fumiya Fujii (The Checkers)
And the final entry is Fumiya Fujii.
For our generation, when we say Fujii, it's Fumiya, not Kaze.
The Checkers appeared as idols, but they were a band that evolved as they aged. I think Fumiya's vocals, in particular, became more lustrous and very sexy.
The entry song is "ONE NIGHT GIGOLO".
Chararara, characchachaa♪ After the intro, it's a rule for our generation to hit someone on the head with a slipper at the timing of "kill you," but it's actually a very sexy song.
◇ ■ ◇ ■ ◇ ■ ◇ ■ ◇
I have entered these eight people, but what do you think?
There are other vocalists with wonderful voices, such as Motohiro Hata and Hideaki Tokunaga-san, but when it comes to a sexy singing voice, I feel like it needs a certain something—a unique stickiness, perhaps? A quality that lingers a bit.
In a sense, the ones I introduced this time might all be rather eccentric vocalists.
I noticed that after entering them, almost all of them ended up being people around my own age, in their late 40s or older. 😅
I wonder if there is a generational bias after all.
Well, please understand that this is a personal entry.
If you trace the roots of "sexy male vocalists" in Japan, there is someone who makes you think he might be the origin, so I would like to introduce him at the end.
