Being an Otaku is Fun! A Story About Encountering a Rare Difference in Interpretation

There are as many differences in interpretation as there are otaku!

Living in the world of otaku is like mountain climbing. You never know where a
hidden crevasse might be. One wrong step, and you could easily fall into a pitfall and tumble headlong. Because of this, otaku have to be careful about where they step while having conversations to avoid these unseen pitfalls.

Because of this, a little bit of tension is always part of conversations between otaku, but sometimes that actually makes things interesting. I once encountered a truly rare difference in interpretation. That experience was precious, and it allowed me to realize how vast the world is. In this article, I would like to write about that experience.

The Dinosaur Breath Controversy(?)

I almost fell into a hidden crevasse when I participated in an event called DINO-A-LIVE 'Dinosaur Great Night Parade 2025'. This event features dinosaur animatronics that approach the audience, and what is known as "fan service" is a major draw. Also, DINO-A-LIVE has many adult fans, and many of them have a favorite dinosaur.

Being bitten by a dinosaur is the “fan service” of all “fan service”, and getting a glimpse inside their mouth is a kind of (though this might be an inappropriate expression) charm like a peek-a-boo. That was where I encountered a difference in interpretation, and I was surprised and moved.

When the spinosaurid dinosaur Suchomimus bites, you can catch a glimpse of its long tongue inside its mouth. There was a fan who described that tongue as dirty. However, this was by no means an insult. It was a theory based on the idea that the dinosaur Suchomimus, whose name means "crocodile mimic," might have had the kind of bad breath typical of a carnivore.

There are various theories about dinosaur bad breath, such as the theory that they didn't smell much because they ruminated in their stomachs like modern herbivores, or the theory that semi-aquatic dinosaurs didn't smell because they washed their mouths while swimming. Because of this, a difference in interpretation regarding whether a dinosaur's tongue is dirty was born.

That's why I can't stop being an otaku!

At that moment, I felt only one thing.

What an interesting community this is, to be able to have a heated discussion about dinosaur bad breath!

In everyday life, it can be difficult to attend DINO-A-LIVE events as an adult. That is why in March 2026, DINO-A-LIVE is holding 'DINOSAUR RUNWAY', a dinosaur live show for adults aged 18 and over. Because of this, it is hard to meet people at DINO-A-LIVE venues and lead that into such a niche conversation as 'What do you think about dinosaur bad breath?'

However, on modern X (formerly Twitter), you can have a 'conversation about dinosaur bad breath'. Furthermore, you can have a discussion between the faction that believes they didn't have much bad breath because they ruminated, and the faction that believes dinosaurs who ate raw fish and burped must have had bad breath. Is there any other opportunity like this?

Usually, differences in interpretation are something to be careful about, but this time it was extremely interesting and, for me, it was fun. If the number of adult fans increases at 'DINOSAUR RUNWAY' in the future, we might be able to have more conversations like this. It was a difference in interpretation that made me think, I want to keep living as an otaku.
