No Strings Attached: To the Me Who Was Trying to Meet Everyone's Expectations
“No Strings Attached.”
In English, this phrase is often used to mean “no strings attached,” “no conditions,” or “no obligations.”
For example, if you say, “No strings attached. I’m just helping,”
it conveys the feeling of, “I don’t need anything in return. I just want to help.”
To exist and to give without being bound by anyone or attached to anything.
The phrase sounds cool, and I wanted to be that way.
But I recently realized that
it wasn’t that I was expecting things from others,
but that I was “trying to meet someone else’s expectations.”
For example,
“I have to reply properly.”
“I should probably smile here.”
“If I say this, they might worry.”
By sensing the “vibe” or “changes in facial expressions” of others,
I was unconsciously reacting in the way they wanted me to.
That might look like kindness at first glance, but from the perspective of “myself,”
it actually means “putting myself on the back burner.”
In truth, I feel uneasy.
I feel like something is off.
But those faint sensations that I used to ignore—
the discomfort I dismissed as “just my imagination” and chose not to see.
That is exactly where my true feelings were hidden.
What is truly important is
not to pretend those feelings don’t exist.
To properly acknowledge those small signs of “something feels off” or “I feel uneasy.”
And then—
to prioritize those feelings of mine above all else.
Even if that means
not meeting someone else’s expectations.
Even if it makes me think, “Will they think I’m unpleasant?” or
“Maybe they’ll hate me.”
Even so,choosing to trust my own feelings.
I think that is what it truly means to live as myself.
—And sometimes, the “courage to be disliked” is also necessary.
It’s a little scary, but let’s try to return to my own feelings.
That courage will surely set me free.
Playing the role of the “me who is expected to be a certain way” by others
might have been comfortable and safe.
But staying there now feels a bit stifling...
—So, I think I’ll gently untie those “strings.”
Isn’t it okay for me to just be me?
I’m a person worthy of love even without trying to please others, right?
And, becoming free from the expectations of others and from my own “roles,”
I want to chooseto just be me.
No, it’s about time—
let’s “choose” it, for my own sake.
🕊
From a life for others to a life for myself. Now, take that first step.
May today be a day where you can truly say “yes” to yourself.
A lighter version of me is waiting beyond the point where I untied the strings.
Let’s gather a little bit of courage and try trusting our own feelings. Because it will surely change the world.
