Common Traits of People Whose Self-Esteem Easily Drops
Hello. I am Shingo, a psychologist at the Shin-Shin Psychology Research Institute.
"Why can't I have more confidence in myself?"
Have you ever felt that way?
To those around you, you are working hard. In fact, you are more considerate and hardworking than most. You have the kindness to act for others and a strong sense of responsibility.
Yet, deep down, you constantly push yourself, thinking, "I'm still not good enough" or "I need to work harder." And then, in a fleeting moment, you feel, "I'm just so tired."
In fact, there are several common traits among people whose self-esteem easily drops. It is not due to a "weakness in character," but rather "habits in how you use your mind."
In other words, it is not that you are inadequate; it is just that your "way of treating your heart" has become a little too harsh.
In this article, I will gently unravel these common traits and share some tips to help your heart feel a little lighter.
1. Focusing only on "what you haven't done"
People whose self-esteem easily drops tend to focus on the "lacking parts" within themselves.
・Things you couldn't do
・Mistakes you made
・Areas where you are inferior to others
You end up collecting only these kinds of things.
At the end of the day, all you remember are things like, "I couldn't do that" or "I didn't say that well at the time."
In reality, there must be many things you have accomplished, but you hardly ever look at them.
This can be described as a state where your mind is biased toward a "danger detection mode." Humans naturally have a tendency to be sensitive to negative information to avoid failure, but when this becomes too strong, you end up underestimating yourself.
Furthermore, if this state continues, the belief that "I can't do it anyway" becomes stronger, and you may even become afraid of taking on challenges itself.
First, try to find even just one thing you "were able to do today."
・You managed to wake up properly
・You went to work
・You were kind to someone
Even small things like that are fine. That is the first step toward recovering your self-esteem.
2. Basing your worth on the evaluation of others
People who are overly concerned about what others think of them also tend to have lower self-esteem.
・I don't want to be disliked
・I don't want my evaluation to drop
・I want to be seen as competent
When these thoughts are strong, you begin to judge your own value based on the reactions of others.
For example, you might feel anxious just because someone's expression clouded over slightly, thinking it might be your fault, or you might worry that you've been disliked just because a reply was slow.
However, the evaluations of others are always changing. They are influenced by that person's mood and situation, and they are not necessarily caused by you.
No matter how hard you try, you cannot be liked by everyone.
Nevertheless, if you use that as your standard, your heart will remain perpetually unstable.
What is important is to regain the perspective of "how do I feel about this?"
・Can I feel that this was good enough?
・Can I feel that I did my best in my own way?
By gradually cultivating these internal standards, you will become less likely to be swayed by the evaluations of others.
3. Trying too hard to be perfect
People who tend to have low self-esteem are actually very hardworking.
・I don't want to fail
・I don't want to be a burden
・I want to do things properly
Because of these thoughts, you may feel that "if it's not 100%, it's meaningless."
But reality is always imperfect. Human relationships, work, and even yourself—nothing is ever perfect.
Yet, you continue to demand perfection only from yourself.
As a result, no matter how hard you try, you feel like it's "still not enough" and cannot feel a sense of accomplishment.
And consequently, only the feeling that "I am no good" continues to pile up.
What is important here is the flexibility to think, "60% is okay too".
In fact, those who can finish at 60% are the ones who can continue steadily for a long time.
When you can forgive yourself for not being perfect, your heart will gradually become lighter.
4. "Being too hard on yourself"
You can be kind to others, but you are very harsh on yourself.
This is also a characteristic of people whose self-esteem easily drops.
・I should have been able to do more
・Why can't I even do this
・I am no good
Are you throwing strong words at yourself like this?
Moreover, those words are often repeated unconsciously.
If a friend said that to you, you would surely be very hurt. In fact, you might even want to distance yourself from that person. And yet, you say it to yourself without a second thought.
And yet, you say it to yourself without a second thought.
What is important in cultivating self-esteem is "the relationship with yourself".
Please try to be just a little kinder with the words you use on yourself.
"You did well today"
"You're still trying your best"
"You're just tired"
Such words will slowly support the foundation of your heart.
It is okay if it feels strange at first. Let's gradually build the habit of saying kind words to yourself.
5. "Being bound by past experiences"
If past experiences of being hurt or memories of being rejected remain strongly, your self-esteem is likely to drop.If past experiences of being hurt or memories of being rejected remain strongly, your self-esteem is likely to drop.
・Things didn't go well in the past
・I was rejected by someone
・I wasn't acknowledged
These events lead to the belief that "I am no good."
And that belief also influences how you perceive current events.
For example, you might feel that you are no good even after a small failure, or you might be unable to accept praise, thinking it was just a fluke.
However, that is a past event, not your current value.
What is important is how you interpret that experience.
“It was painful at the time, but I managed to overcome it.”
“Because of that experience, I am who I am today.”
By reframing it this way, the past changes from something that binds you into something that supports you.
Summary
Your self-esteem dropping easily does not mean you are weak.
Rather, it is because:
・You are observant
・You care about those around you
・You are a hard worker
That is precisely why your heart gets tired easily.
And that sensitivity is, in essence, a very important strength.
What matters is not trying to change yourself, but gradually changing how you interact with yourself.
You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to force yourself to be positive.
It is okay to have days where things don't go well, and it is okay to have days where you stand still.
Even so, you who are living today are a person of true value.
Taking it little by little is fine. At your own pace, let's regain the sense of valuing yourself.
That accumulation will eventually lead to a feeling that 'this is enough.'
