[HSS-type HSP] "The air of a veteran after just one month?" What I've learned from over 10 job changes in my late 50s
I was often told this in new environments.
"It's only been a month...? You seem like you've been here much longer."
It's only been a month since I joined.
In my own mind, my brain is running at full capacity from reading the room too much.
There is so much new information to learn.
Even though I sleep like the dead every day after getting home...
For some reason, from the outside,
I appear to be
a "composed veteran."
Isn't this
a "hidden talent (also known as over-adaptation)" of the HSS-type HSP?
A full-speed sprint in the name of "seriousness."
There is one other phrase that is always said along with it.
"You really are so serious, aren't you?"
That's right, I am serious.
But that is a little different from
the kind of seriousness that means "steady, step-by-step progress."
I guess the "background" of the work I'm asked to do and get ahead of it.
I solve potential problems that might bother someone before I'm even asked to.
I keep my mental radar constantly scanning to see if anyone is in a bad mood.
I do thisat full power unconsciously—
rather than just being "serious,"
it might be closer to being a "craftsman" (laughs).
Because I have strong curiosity, new work is fun.
But because I am highly sensitive,
my heart is worn down by a single sigh from someone else.
That is why I am exhausted at the end of the day.
I want to embrace my past self.
Looking back at who I was then,
I want to gently tell myself:
"It would have been okay to rely on others more, or to make mistakes."
Being told
"You seem like you've been here much longer"
is proof of how much you observed your surroundings
and desperately created a "shape that fits in" all by yourself.
You don't have to try so hard;
it is okay for you to just be there.
I want to embrace
my past self
who was trying so desperately to fit in.
A breath to view your "desperate" self objectively
There are things I understand now, precisely because of this.
Make time to view your "desperate" self objectively,
and dare to take a breath.
Stop trying to be
the reliable person,
the serious person,
or the quick learner.
Instead, turn your "I'll learn slowly" aura up to the max.
And then,
even for things you understand,
and things you can do,
take a breath
before you say it,
or do it.
HSS-type HSPs have quick minds,
so we tend to anticipate things,
get things done too efficiently,
and move from one task to the next.
As a result, we end up working many times harder than others
and become completely exhausted.
Therefore,
take a breath,
and try working
while creating space in your heart and mind.
Stop being "desperate"
and dare to
take a breath.
Try to be conscious of that.
Having said that,
when your emotions and thoughts
are completely overwhelmed,
you might be thinking,
"Will I even be able to remember that?"
In times like that,
just saying "I'm overwhelmed!" and
taking a breath
is enough.
When I am overwhelmed,
my breathing becomes very shallow.
So,
"Phew."
Exhale softly like that.
Before you exhale "phew,"
you naturally inhale first,
so it's a natural breath.
While you're at it, look around you.
Give it a try.
That was the secret for me to continue working long-term and comfortably
while protecting myself.
Instead of acting like the "capable new hire,"
relax your shoulders just a little,
and try turning your "I'll learn slowly" aura
up to the max.
If you are currently exhausted from projecting too much "mysterious stability" at work,
tell yourself,
"I'll learn slowly," regarding both your tasks and your relationships.
I hope things feel a little easier for you starting tomorrow.
Thank you for reading until the end.
