Short-Short Story: "Rainy Season Fortune-Telling" *Weekly Short-Short Note 6/21 Prompt
"Wait for the rainy season. You'll know your fortune for the year."
That's what Grandma said when I fell down and started crying my eyes out.
"Why the rainy season?"
Grandma just smiled at my question.
When the rainy season arrived, Grandma would say,
"It's nothing but rain this year. Let's look forward to next year."
She would say the most obvious things.
"The raindrops aren't suitable for fortune-telling this year."
"I don't have enough samples yet."
"It's the World Cup this year, so it's an exception."
She kept dodging the question like that for years.
"Hey, when will I finally know my fortune?"
"Very soon."
After repeating this for years, and then...
"Grandma, tell me already."
When I said that with puffed-up cheeks, Grandma said with a beaming smile,
"Oh... what a beautiful bride. I'm sure happy rain will continue to fall for you."
I had known it all along; it had nothing to do with the rainy season.
She was simply telling me to look to next year so I wouldn't cry.
"Oh my. This child is crying again on a sunny day."
Well, of course I'd cry.
She said that and laughed.
