The above is an article stating that the percentage of elementary, junior high, and high school students who do not read books in a day has increased by 1.5 times compared to 10 years ago. If we take that content at face value, it can be said that it conveys that the trend of moving away from reading is progressing further.
Today's children are a generation that will live alongside AI. Therefore, in order to control such AI, I would like them to acquire vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills through reading.
However, is this survey only targeting 'reading paper books'? If so, the story changes a little. This is because the experience of encountering and reading text is not limited to 'reading paper books'.
We are in an era where even office workers on the train read newspapers on iPads. I feel that through the internet and social media, children today are encountering and reading text more than we think.
In other words, if this is a survey result showing that more people are not 'reading paper books', it seems this would be more of a 'moving away from printed media (paper books)' rather than 'moving away from reading'... but the article above doesn't clarify that much.
I would like to continue paying attention to the issue of children's reading habits.

The survey mentioned above seems to include e-books as well. For details, please refer to Professor Furusawa's comment in this article.
